THE LESBIAN LOVE STORY YOU'VE BEEN DYING TO READ.

Ash Persaud is about to become a reaper in the afterlife, but she is determined to see her first love Poppy Morgan again, the only thing that separates them is death.

Car headlights. The last thing Ash hears is the snap of breaking glass as the windscreen hits her and breaks into a million pieces like stars. But she made it, she's still here. Or is she?

This New Year's Eve, Ash gets an invitation from the afterlife she can't decline: to join a clan of fierce girl reapers who take the souls of the city's dead to await their fate.

But Ash can't forget her first love, Poppy, and she will do anything to see her again… even if it means they only get a few more days together. Dead or alive…

NOT EVEN DEATH CAN TEAR THEM APART.

Tanya Byrne: Afterlove

Ugyanis Ash életében váratlan fordulat következik be, pont a legrosszabb pillanatban.
Since this is that lesbian love story I've been dying to read…

Maybe she isn't the one. Maybe we'll burn bright for a few weeks then collapse in on ourselves, but Mr Moreno says that's how galaxies are made anyway.

I think about what Mr Moreno told us last year, about that guy, the astronomer called Carl Sagan, who said that we're all made of star stuff. The nitrogen in our DNA. The calcium in our teeth. The iron in out blood. All of it was made billions of years ago in the interiors of collapsing stars
Mr Moreni says it's funny because humans have spent years and years studying the universe. We've built rockets and pointed them towards the moon. Peered through telescopes, trying to see what fills the space between the stars. But the universe doesn't have to do that because, according to Carl Sagan, anyway, we – our very existence – is a way for the universe to know itself.
Some part of us knows that, apparently. Knows that is where we came from and we long to return. I used to think that within Poppy there was a series of locked doors that, if she let me, I'd spend the rest of my life trying to open. But now that I look at her, I know Carl Sagan is right. She has the cosmos within her. I can see it, trying to free itself from the confines of her ribs and out, out through her skin. I can see the stars at the ends of her hair, tugging her towards the sky.
Back to where she belongs.

Now that we're away from the embrace of the trees, I can see the moon, high and bright in the sky, casting enough light to illuminate where we're standing. But before I can see where we are, a small bird swoops over our heads and I gasp again, ducking and covering the top of my head with my hands.
“Will you calm down?” Esen hisses. “It's just a bat.”
“A bat?”
That's even worse
She doesn't seem fazed, though, pointing to the left. “That's the entrance, so it must be this way.”
“What is?” I ask, but she's already walking away. I have to trot to catch up and when I do, I stop, turning in a circle, my eyes wide as I realise that we're surrounded by gravestones.
“Is this a cemetery?” I frown. “You're taking your goth aesthetic way too far, Esen.”
“Don't worry. I haven't brought any cider.”
She laughs, but I don't.

“Fine, but you know that I'm probably not going to be able to escape over Christmas, right?”
“I know. You said. But you're still coming out on New Years's Eve, aren't you?”
“Yes!” I grin. “I can't wait. I just need to find an excuse to get out of my Aunty Lalita's party.”
“I told you, food poisoning. Works every time.”
“I know, but as much as I want to see you, I don't think I can make myself puke. You know I hate it.”
“Fair enough.”
“Besides, I'm worried my mother will want to stay home with me.”
She points at me. “Good point.”
“So I'm thinking period pain. According to that app you made me download, I'm due on.”
“OK. So no under the belt stuff that night.” She gives me the thumbs up. “Got it.”
If she was close enough, I'd whack her.

I glance over ny shoulder at Rosh as I head ovr to the wardrobe. I doubt she's even noticed that I'm back in the room, but I still open the wardrobe door and hide behind it as I put on some clean underwear and wrap the towel around me again.
“Aren't you getting backache sitting like that? What xoz reading anyway?” I ask again as I sit on the edge of my bed and flip open the lid on the bottle of Palmers, squeezing some into ms hand. She turns the book for me to see the cover with a pointed huff before settling back against the pillows.
Noughts & Crosses. I read that last year.”
“Hm-mm.”
“I loved it. It's so clever.”
“Hm-mm.”
“It makes you think, doesn't it?”
“Hm-mm.”
“I thought it was a GCSE text, though?” I'm sure it is, I think as I cream my leg, the whole room immediately filling with the familiar smell of cocoa butter. “How come you're reading it already?”
“Mrs Sangha recommended it.”
“I thought you had Miss Briggs for English?”
“Mrs Sangha, the school librarian,” Rosh says, finally bothering to look up from the book, even if it's just to roll her eyes at me. “You know, from the library? That buliding next to tha canteen with all the books in it.”
I pull a face at her as I squeeze some more coca butter into my palm and she pulls one back.

‘She gave me her number.’
She turns to look at me, her light brown eyes suddenly dark. ‘You haven’t WhatsApped her yet, have you?’
‘Of course not,’ I tell her as we head into H&M.
‘Did you find her Insta?’
‘Of course.’ What am I? An amateur? ‘It’s locked.’

‘Between him and that cat two doors down . . .’
‘Dorito?’ I ask with a frown. ‘What did he ever do to you?’
‘He hates me. He always hisses at me when I walk past.’
‘Cats can sense evil, can’t they?’
‘It’s a shame they don’t sense disrespectful daughters.’

'She’s probably waiting for you to get in touch.’
‘I can’t,’ I whine pitifully.
‘Why?’
‘It’s too soon. She’ll think I’m a loser.’
‘You are a loser. Better she know now.’ I smile sarcastically.
‘Thanks, sis.’
‘Just WhatsApp her.’
