Tal Bauer: Hell and Gone

One hanged man.
Two vanished cowboys.
Three hundred missing cattle.
The Crazy Mountains are devouring everything they see.

Everett Dawson, Montana’s newest Stock Detective, has been sent from Helena down to the Crazy Mountains. Cattle are going missing in the Crazies and Everett is charged with finding these modern-day rustlers and bringing them in.

When he arrives, he finds a hanged cowboy and a heap of questions. Was it suicide or was it murder? Why are cowboys fleeing the Crazies? Far from a simple investigation, Everett's case plunges deep into the mountains' dark past.

Lawrence Jackson, the bad boy who runs the Lazy Twenty Two, was the last man to see the dead cowboy alive. There’s a whole forest fire of smoke swirling around Lawrence, and where there’s smoke, there’s flame… and maybe even murder.

But Everett is drawn to Lawrence, and if he takes the risk Lawrence offers, will Everett find what he craves, or will the Crazies claim their next victim?

Tal Bauer: Hell and Gone

Tal Bauer: Hell and Gone

Tal Bauer: Hell and Gone

Gyakrabban fogok kirándulni a komfortzónámon kívülre.

There was something about the man, an intensity. It was like trying to stare at the sun.

He nodded around them, to the wild trees and untamed country, the towering pines mixed with poplar and ash, and the pastel sky unfurled over the mountains like a blanket shaken out on the wind. “This is raw land. Untouched since time began.”

“You can’t find places like this in the world. Not anymore.”

All rootless things are grabbed by the wind, and so was Everett Dawson.

He’d thought getting as far from Afghanistan as possible would shake that feeling free from his bones, get rid of the failure that drowned him from the inside and clawed at the inside of his skin. Failure was a monster that lived inside of him, wore his skin in the world.

Chapter Eight

[…] you may not yet have the cowboyin’ all squared away, but you got a dangerous mind on you, Army.

Lawrence caught him, held him up. “You’re seeing ghosts, Army,” he whispered in Everett’s ear. “Come back home.”

These mountains were pristine country, untouched from the moment of their creation. Land scraped the stars and canyons yawned into the bowels of the earth. Vast fields of golden grasses, grazing land that spread down from Crazy Peak like gold dust scattered from God. And emptiness. So few people, so much land.

It was a place to die for.

Chapter One

Meeting Lawrence was like meeting an immoveable force of nature. He was the mountain, the peak, the steadiness. And Everett had blown up against him, wind-torn and ravaged, a broken thing thrown away, discarded from life and everything he’d hoped for.

DzsDzs88 IP>!

”…It takes a certain kind of man to want to get out here every day, wrestle with Mother Nature and all her moods.” His gaze flicked over the flames to Everett. “Takes time to learn that, and you’re gettin’ along. That ain’t nothing to make fun of, a man makin’ his way.”

Chapter Seven

DzsDzs88 IP>!

“Open your eyes.”

He didn’t want to. He didn’t want to feel anything beyond this, the carnal rush of his body. He didn’t want it to be this wonderful. He didn’t want to look into Lawrence’s eyes and see something there. See a spark falling from those burning eyes, see something that could ignite his soul, that could threaten to unmake his world again.

He didn’t want to feel anything for Lawrence.
