Arriving in New York with no apartment or friends she wonders whether she's made the right decision until she falls in with a crowd of other seasoned and fledgling writers who take her under their wings…

Told in alternating chapters is Darcy's novel, a suspenseful thriller about Lizzie, a teen who slips into the 'Afterworld' to survive a terrorist attack. But the Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead and as Lizzie drifts between our world and that of the Afterworld, she discovers that many unsolved – and terrifying – stories need to be reconciled. And when a new threat resurfaces, Lizzie learns her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she loves and cares about most.

The most important email that Darcy Patel ever wrote was three paragraphs long.

“Imogen’s debut is about a teenager who sets things on fire,” Kiralee said. “Pyromancy! And she thinks I’m bad.”
“Hey, I just glamorize burning shit down. That’s way better than cultural appropriation.”

“There.” The pen smacked against the table and Lalana lifted her glass of iced chai. “You have an apartment now. And it’s all my fault.”

“Do you know if Kiralee's read it?”
Imogen looked at the book in Darcy's hand. “Probably, seeing as how she wrote it.”
Darcy shoved Bunyip back into its spot on the shelf. “I meant my book. As you know.”
“Oh, that.” Imogen was smirking now. “Not yet. Kiralee wanted me to read it first. You know, in case it sucked.”
“Seriously? You were checking me out for her?”
“Sure. Don't you ever do that for your friends?”

“Here we go… search and replace 'veins' with 'penguins.' Oh, look: ’187 replacements made.'”
“I used 'veins' 187 times? Are you serious?”
Imogen was laughing. “Yeah, I think my protag had anger coursing through his veins last night too. You got into my head, girl!”
“Sorry. I suck at writing.” Darcy frowned. “Um, exactly why did you replace it with 'penguins'?”
“So when you do the rewrites, you won't miss it.” Imogen tapped her trackpad, and the swoosh of sent mail sounded. “You're welcome.”

“You write as respectfully as you can, and then you publish. You uncover your mistakes by lobbing your books into the world.”
“But people might yell at me!”
“Yes, it's a bit like learning French. When you open your mouth, you risk sounding like an idiot. But if you don't take that chance, you'll never speak at all.”
“Yeah," Imogen said. "But bad grammar doesn't offend anyone's religion.”
“Have you met the French?” Kiralee asked.
