All of us perceive the world as a whole through the experience of our senses. Yet our senses can only reveal a world that is fragmented and incomplete.

By de-emphasizing the appearance of the physical world in favor of the idea of form, the cartoon places itself in the world of concepts.
Through traditional realism, the comics artist can portray the world without – - and through the cartoon, the world within.

Comics panels fracture both time and space, offering a jagged, staccato rhythm of unconnected moments. But closure allows us to connect these moments and mentally construct a continuous, unified reality.

Traditional western art and literature don't wander much. On the whole we're a pretty goal-oriented culture. But in the east, there's a rich tradition of cyclical and labyrinthine works of art. Japanese comics may be heirs to this tradition, in the way they so often emphasize being there over getting there.

Cartooning as a form of amplification through simplification.[…] By stripping down an image to its essential „meaning”, an artist can amplify that meaning in a way that realistic art can't.
