Plucky and ambitious, Marilla Cuthbert is thirteen years old when her world is turned upside down. Her beloved mother dies in childbirth, and Marilla suddenly must bear the responsibilities of a farm wife: cooking, sewing, keeping house, and overseeing the day-to-day life of Green Gables with her brother, Matthew, and father, Hugh.

In Avonlea—a small, tight-knit farming town on a remote island—life holds few options for farm girls. Her one connection to the wider world is Aunt Elizabeth “Izzy” Johnson, her mother’s sister, who managed to escape from Avonlea to the bustling city of St. Catharines. An opinionated spinster, Aunt Izzy’s talent as a seamstress has allowed her to build a thriving business and make her own way in the world.

Emboldened by her aunt, Marilla dares to venture beyond the safety of Green Gables and discovers new friends and new opportunities. Joining the Ladies Aid Society, she raises funds for an orphanage run by the Sisters of Charity in… (tovább)

Sarah McCoy: Marilla of Green Gables

Sarah McCoy: Marilla of Green Gables

“Aw, you’ve figured out my villainous scheme. Villainous: V-I-double-L-A-I-N-O-U-S. We can practice our spelling along the way.”
He could charm the devil.
“Biology too, I suppose. Exercising the body does improve the mind,” she relented.

True to his word, Thomas Lynde had worked steadily until Rachel was eighteen and he had enough to buy a farm in Avonlea. There was a beautiful piece of property for sale at the end of the main road where most folks thought Hugh should’ve set his homestead but hadn’t. It was the more sociable choice. And so, on Rachel’s suggestion, Thomas purchased the acreage to the north of Green Gables, making the Lyndes and Cuthberts proper neighbors. It was a quick jaunt up the lane to arrive at Rachel’s front door.

Mrs. Blythe passed away, and less than a month later Mr. Blythe followed. Everyone said it was the pull of the soul after its other half. She’d wondered if such things were true. Moreover, what happened if your soul never had another half?

Izzy reached down and scooped up two pieces of sandy rose quartz from the yard.
“It isn’t Hope River, but it’ll do.” She closed her eyes a beat, then flung one of the rocks into the white pasture. It slid across the snow and stood like a dot of ink from a paused pen.
She handed Marilla the second stone. “Make a wish.”
Marilla took it, smoothing it between her fingers before finally speaking her heart aloud. She’d been silent too long.
“It would be nice to know the love of a child one day.”
Izzy kissed her cheek. “And so you shall.”
Then Marilla pitched the stone into the pasture with all her might.

„Tell me about the red beaches…” Clara's eyelids fluttered on the edge of sleep.
Unlike the oyster shores of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island was ringed red like the skin of a cut apple.
„I never knew our island was differend from the others.”
„Abegweit,” Clara murmured. „That's the native Micmac name. They say the god Glooscap made our island by mixing all the colors of the earth and stroking the ocean with his paintbrush. Abegweit means 'cradle in the waves.'”
