Robert J. Harris: The Day the World Went Loki

'At that moment the kitchen door opened and something colossal came stomping out. It was about seven feet tall with green skin and tufts of black fur on the back of its ham-like hands. A long, thick tail was dragging heavily across the floor behind it. It was wearing Mum's green summer dress and white apron.' Lewis and Greg have accidentally turned their mum into a troll, and the town of St Andrews into a fantasy world overrun by yetis, elves, dragons and valkyries – few of them friendly. When the brothers recited an ancient rhyme to conjure up an extra day of the week, they had no idea it would work – or that the day would belong to the banished Norse god, Loki, master of mischief, monsters and mayhem. As the day wears on, time seems to be lagging behind. Will this day of madness never end? Can two ordinary boys outwit an ancient lord and his monstrous minions?

Robert J. Harris: The Day the World Went Loki

“Did you know that in 1752 they dropped eleven days from the calendar in England,” Greg laughed, “and people rioted in the streets because they wanted their days back?”
“I know,” Lewis burst out. “They were changing over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. That’s part of my project, remember?”

Lewis read the page out loud.
“In the Orkney Islands of Scotland this rhyme, relating to a lost day of the week, was recorded by the Reverend Murdo Abercrombie in 1857. Its meaning, however, is obscure.”
“So?”
“Read the rhyme, idiot!” Greg insisted.
Lewis read aloud in a long-suffering tone:

“The Lokiday Rhyme.
The day that was lost returns in time
If two will but recite this rhyme.
t Thorsday’s end but say it fine,
Restore the day that once was mine.”

“You see, it’ll be a lucky day,” said Greg. “And that’s just what I need – luck.”
“It says Lokiday, not Luckyday.”

At that moment the kitchen door opened and something colossal came stomping out. It was about seven feet tall with green skin and tufts of black fur on the back of its ham-like hands. It had a big, knobbly face and nostrils almost as wide as its round, yellow eyes. A long, thick tail was dragging heavily across the floor behind it. It was wearing Mum’s green summer dress and white apron.
“Just let me know if you want more,” the monster offered, sounding just like Mum.
