Rob Thurman: Doubletake

Half-human/half-monster Cal Leandros knows that family is a pain. But now that pain belongs to his half-brother, Niko. Niko’s shady father is in town, and he needs a big favor. Even worse is the reunion being held by the devious Puck race—including the Leandros’ friend, Robin—featuring a lottery that no Puck wants to win.
As Cal tries to keep both Niko and Robin from paying the ultimate price for their kin, a horrific reminder from Cal’s own past arrives to remind him that blood is thicker than water—and that’s why it’s so much more fun to spill.

But while patience is a virtue, pissing me off is not.

Chapter 13

Lindaaa>!

If you weren’t an undead mummified cat person, there was something wrong with you.

"… I copied this from that spooky little girl two blocks down who’s always writing on the sidewalk. It’s gibberish.”
“Actually I think it’s Hungarian.” Niko tilted his head. Huh.
“Could be. Her place smells of goulash a lot. The good spicy kind.”

Lindaaa>!

“What did you do to piss off Goodfellow this badly?” Niko asked, edging away from me as if I were color-contagious. He was dressed in the black-and-gray clothes the puck had smugly given him. Normal clothes. The kind that didn’t make you look like someone pulled the head off a Golfing Ken doll and stuck a catastrophically pissed-off serial killer’s head in its place, which was a look I was pulling off in spades.

My opinion about those movies had been formed from minute one: If you could trot or even speed-walk, there was no excuse for your not surviving that apocalypse.

“When did you stop following my directions?” I asked. He raised an eyebrow at the question with a comeback that was uncomfortably true.
“When did you start following mine?”

“It’s fixed,” he’d said slowly, smoothing my hair down. All the fake crying was real water and had turned my straight hair damp and messy. “What’d you do, Cal? I mean, I see what you did, but what made you think of that?” He’d seen part of what I’d done with the paying. That was enough. Maybe someday I’d tell him the rest when he got over his mopey phase.
I’d smiled up at him. My real smile. Proud and wanting him to be proud of me. He took care of me and now I took care of him. “I was practical.”

Ri_ver>!

“You are definitely not in the union. When this is over, you should retire and go home to roll dice with the old men,” I said lazily, before tossing him one of the dozen cupcakes Rapture had given us. “A rocket is nothing. We once had a nuke.”
