People often have babies because of some egotistical reason and not just for the fact that they want to raise a great human being and contribute to the world. They want to see a little version of themselves walking around.

The moment Justin decided to cross the street to go to Babylon was not in the script – it was Russell Mulcahy’s invention. I saw the dailies and I thought, “Now why is Russell focusing on Justin stepping into a puddle?” And I realized that it was because he is becoming baptized. It's a brilliant image. Justin is standing there smoking and he's very nervous, because the first time you would go into a bar you're very, very nervous about it- He puts out the cigarette and then you see him step into that water and he’s baptized into the world.

I've always said it's not who you love, it's how you love. Genitalia is just God's way of accessorizing.

“What we’ve learned is that showing sex is very much like opera, “Daniel Lipman explains. In opera, the reason people sing and go into their aria is because language can only take you so far in terms of expressing emotion. When you sing, it's expansive and that's how you express your emotion. It's the same thing with sex. We have sex for many reasons, whether it's anger, vengeance, joy, celebration, or despair.”

When actors did show up, the producers found that they were still not going to have an easy time. A lot of actors who were not gay felt that they needed to state that up front. Then, some went out of their way to make sure that Ron, Dan, and Tony knew that they were gay so the producers would be more open to their performance. Some of the actors even felt they needed to start taking off their clothes at the audition to appeal to what the producers were looking for, which was, needless to say, not the right approach.

Once they learned that she shared their vision for the series, Sharon was offered the part of Debbie. No other actress was even considered for the role.

Sisters and Queer as Folk both deal with minority groups who I don't think are given full-class citizenship in the world and have to struggle harder to be accepted. I think in many cases, women and gay men are both devaluated in our culture and treated almost like second-class citizens. There is a similarity between those two shows.

PETER PAIGE: One of my favorite moments in the history of the series is Ted's speech to Emmett about „God loves you just the way you are.” I think it's Scott's finest riff in the entire series, and it's just a phenomenal piece of writing. As a gay man, I came to believe that God loved me the way that I am later in my life. What I wouldn't have given to have heard that in a TV show when I was fifteen.

The boys and girls of Liberty Avenue started speaking to us almost immediately. That's the test. You know you can surmount any obstacle as long as your characters speak to you. It's spooky and mystical. But they do. Really.
