Naomi Novik’s beloved series returns, with Capt. Will Laurence and his fighting dragon Temeraire once again taking to the air against the broadsides of Napoleon’s forces and the friendly—and sometimes not-so-friendly—fire of British soldiers and politicians who continue to suspect them of divided loyalties, if not outright treason.

For Laurence and Temeraire, put out to pasture in Australia, it seems their part in the war has come to an end just when they are needed most. Newly allied with the powerful African empire of the Tswana, the French have occupied Spain and brought revolution and bloodshed to Brazil, threatening Britain’s last desperate hope to defeat Napoleon.

So the British government dispatches Arthur Hammond from China to enlist Laurence and Temeraire to negotiate a peace with the angry Tswana, who have besieged the Portuguese royal family in Rio—and as bait, Hammond bears an offer to reinstate Laurence to his former rank and seniority as a captain in… (tovább)

Naomi Novik: Crucible of Gold

Naomi Novik: Crucible of Gold

“I cannot pretend that I am in any real sense an officer of any corps when I am determined never again to submit to orders which my own judgment should find immoral.”

[Temeraire] was reconciled to the loss further, when he considered that Curicuillor had provided them with an abundance of supply, and even made him a present of a pair of silver hoops, which Laurence with difficulty dissuaded him from having pierced through his wing-edges.
„They would likely catch, in battle,” Laurence said.
„I am sure I could avoid that,” Temeraire said, "but it is quite true that only one pair would not be very impressive. When we should take a prize next, perhaps we may get a few dozen, and then it will be something like.
„Something like a Covent Garden dancer,” Laurence said to Granby with a sigh.
„You shan't complain to me”, Granby said with some justice.

“As midwingman I surely cannot need a chaperone, sir; and anyway, ought you hire one without consulting Mother?”
[…]
“When we should again be in England, in her purview, naturally you shall not want for any other guidance,” he said. “Until then, I cannot consider myself alone adequate supervision; have you never felt the want,” he added desperately, by way of persuasion, “of some companion, to whom you might turn for— for advice?”
“Mother has told me all about that,” Emily said with impatience, “and I don’t mean to do anything stupid and put myself out of service for a year; whatever else should I have to talk about with some stuffy old woman who will sniff because I don’t wear skirts?”

But the sailors were unconvinced, and viewed the dragons as their only defense, so that if ever Temeraire tried to take a nap, the sailors were sure to make a great noise in the sails overhead, or send a cannonball rolling across the deck, or drop a coil of rope upon him from aloft.
„I might be a danger to them, after all” Temeraire said, disgruntled, when a pailful of slurry had by supposed accident been allowed to pour down onto his neck.

Gerry sniffed wetly and said „ I do not want a dragon myself”, which Temeraire could only approve: perhaps at last he might have another person in his crew who did not mean to go scurrying off to some other dragon, just when he and Laurence had got them trained properly.

…and it came out that this King Arthur and his knights had done nothing of real note but to kill innocent dragons all around Britain: almost certainly a pack of lies, as Forthing admitted they had not possessed even any guns at the time, and unpleasant lies at that.

„Cui?” Hualpa said, gesturing, and some young men came dragging a cart laden with hot baskets of delicious-smelling things: guinea pigs, skinned, stuffed with a surt of nutty bean, and roasted: and the baskets themselves made of maize husks, so one might pick them up and eat the entire thing at once. Temeraire ate five for consolation.

„My dear” Laurence said, laying a restraining hand upon Temeraire's neck, when Temeraire has finished translating this exchange, "I must remind you it is not stealing: these men are the subjects of the King, but even so do not belong to him, as property, and saving the obligations of their duty and the law have the right to dispose of themselves as they please.
„Well – yes, of course,” Temeraire said, although Laurence could not help but notice that Temeraire seemed very willing to enter into the local notion of possession where it came to his crew […]

„It is not exactly slavery, though,” Temeraire said. "You would not say that you were a slave, after all, only because you are mine.
It was some time since Laurence had considered himself entitled to demand Temeraire's obedience, which otherwise might have enabled him to explain the contradiction easily; and on the face of it, he realized in some dismay, the relations between captain and beast could with more rationality be given the character of possession by the latter, than the former.
[…]
„I dare say,” Granby said […] "At least I am damned sure Iskierka would agree with [him] on the subject; pray do not say it so loud. This wretched country cannot be a good influence: we may count ourselves lucky if Temeraire don't go home thinking dragons ought to have men and not just votes.

„But I have not thought of Laurence marrying.” [Temeraire] did not see why it should be at all desirable.
„How are there to be children, otherwise?” Curicuillor said, in a faintly exasperated tone. „I hope you do not set your heart only on one person. What if he should die with no children at all, because you are wanting all his attention: then you will be quite alone and it will serve you right, for not planning.”
