An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens her new home and her fragile place in it, in a stunning sci-fi debut that’s both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total.

On this Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now she has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works—and shamelessly flirts—with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge… (tovább)

Micaiah Johnson: The Space Between Worlds

Alapvetően tetszett a könyv.

They say hunting monsters will turn you into one. That isn't what's happening now. Sometimes to kill a dragon, you have to remember that you breathe fire too. This isn't a becoming; it's a revealing. I've been a monster all along.

When I see her, absent the sunspots of her peers, her teeth shining white in that ever-benevolent smile, I think, There, there I am. Because that's what a sister is: a piece of yourself you can finally love, because it's in someone else.

I want to tell her that I'm not even sure I can die anymore, that I think my destiny is this: to watch every version of myself bleed on different ground until I am all that's left.

For now, I'm nowhere. I live in Wiley but I'm legally still Ashtown's, and neither has a claim on me that counts. It's a space between worlds, no different from the star-lined darkness I stand in when I traverse. The darkness is worth it, because I know what waits on the other side.

It is only one world in infinite universes where this impossible happiness exists, but that is what makes it so valuable.

In the far reaches of an infinite cosmos, there's a galaxy that looks just like the Milky Way, with a solar system that's the spitting image of ours, with a planet that's a dead ringer for earth, with a house that's indistinguishable from yours, inhabited by someone who looks just like you, who is right now reading this very book and imagining you, in a distant galaxy, just reaching the end of this sentence.

We used to believe the universe was stable. We saw its cycles, the reliable circles it tracked, and called the pattern static, meaning unmoving. Then we learned its wildness – asteroids that leave their own clusters and impact with planes that've also abandoned their orbits, everything dancing off track to the music of chaos.
