Mary Robinette Kowal: Of Noble Family

If working glamour mek woman lose picknee then no new slave woulda born.”
“I understand your point, but must, respectfully, disagree. All of the best medical science says that the energy toll on the mother’s body from working glamour is a danger to both her and the child.”
“English medicine. You t’ink glamour all one thing.” Nkiruka shook her head and held up three fingers. “Is three different magics. Two safe. Sound and scent. Even light all right, if not too much. Like walking. Walking good for de mother. Running, no.”

“Hey, doctor!”
The well-dressed woman peered over her shoulder. “Yes?”
Jane gaped. “But you are a woman.”

“Really?” Vincent lifted his head.
Jane tried to reply only to his surprise, not the bruises. “At any rate, he or she moves more when you talk.”
“Perhaps I should sit here and recite the classics, then. Or moralize upon—God!”

“Oh. That was beautifully done. And you did not speak, then. Simply pointed back to the house. When I had changed out of my wet things and you were waiting at my door, I thought you had followed me. Truly artful. I am embarrassed anew that I did not sort that out.”
“I am pleased to see that being embarrassed no longer makes you angry.”
“Not usually.”

“What are these bold plans of yours?”
“First, I thought I might write a book.”
“A book, eh? A novel such as Melody reads, perhaps? Full of young women pining for arrogant men?”
“Oh, no. While I would argue that I have some experience regarding arrogant men, I thought to indulge in my own interests and write a book about glamour.”
