Mark Twain: The Complete Humorous Sketches and Tales Mark Twain: The Complete Humorous Sketches and Tales

Here, for the first time, are all of Mark Twain's humorous sketches and tales compiled in one volume. Some of these 136 selections have not appeared in any collection of Twain's work to date.
Just why Mark Twain is as popular in the 1960s as he was in the 1860s is apparent on every page of this book. From Curing a Cold written in 1862 to Italian Without a Master of 1904, these are stories with the special touch of infectious humor for which he was so justly famous. A prolific and often unorthodox writer, Twain was essentially a teller of tales, and in the midst of his books on travel and reminiscenses he often drops into the narrative an amusing incident that just happened to come to mind. Therefore thirty of the sketches and tales in this book have been gathered from five of his books of travel and autobiography – Roughing It, Innocents Abroad, A Tramp Abroad, Life on the Mississippi, and Following the Equator.

Mark Twain: The Complete Humorous Sketches and Tales

A pálmát tőlem a német nyelvterülethez és általában a nyelvekhez kötődő írásai kapják (a teljesség igénye nélkül): német nyelvterülethez: Ascending the Riffelberg; The Awful German Language; Skeleton for Black Forest Novel; Legend of Sagenfeld, in Germany; At the Appetite Cure; The Austrian Edison Keeping School Again; nyelvekhez: Concerning the American Language; Introduction to "The New Guide of the Conversation in Portuguese and English"'; A Cure for the Blues – ebben MT „legyilkolja” a fiktív regényírót, majd végigszenvedteti az olvasót a kisregényen – na, ebbe majd belepusztultam, de ez éppen hogy MT hatalmas stílusbravúrjának „köszönhető”, csöpögős, következetlen, álnaiv, összességében: vitriolba mártott tollal megrajzolt karikatúra; Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses – MT (a nem fiktív) Coopert is „legyilkolja” (angol szakon a stílusgyakorlat egy kiváló célpontja lehet pontról pontra végigelemezni MT metszőkésének nyomát!); a német nyelvhez, a franciához vagy az olaszhoz kötődő írásait különösen élvezetesnek gondolom az illető nyelvet beszélők számára (annak írom, aki nem bírja ezeket a nyelveket: olaszul én se tudok, mégis remek szórakozás volt az Italian with Grammar vagy az Italian without a Master); a „német”-hez: l. fent, a franciához: The Jumping Frog és némileg rövidített változata: Private History of the „Jumping Frog” Story. Kedvenc toposza még MT-nek az „amerikaiak Európában” – meg általában az amerikaiak –, és találtam olyan írást is, amely mint egy rajzfilm (vö. Gyalogkakukk) pergett le szemem előtt, ahogy olvastam: When the Buffalo Climbed a Tree. A könyv lényege: a humor, a nevetés sok mindenre gyógyír!
