A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt. The family house is in the small Far West town of Fingerbone set on a glacial lake, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck, and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town „chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere.” Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.

Múltkor kicsit morogtam, hogy a The Plot c. regényben minden irodalmi utalás meg van magyarázva, de az speciel kapóra jött, hogy a Housekeepingre való (amúgy elég vaskos) utalás is jól meg volt magyarázva, mert azt magamtól nem ismertem volna fel. Tudtam e regényről, meg a Gilead nagyon jó volt, úgyhogy biztos elolvastam volna ezt is előbb-utóbb, de így hamarabb olvastam el.
És oké, persze hogy oké. Jobb is annál.
De izé, mindig az a de.
A Gileadban pl. tök hihető volt, hogy a hetvenes lelkész fazon kissé elégikus, békés, derűs, belenyugvó hangon szól az életről.
Ahhoz képest viszont nekem nem hihető, hogy az eléggé kaotikus kamaszkorára később visszaemlékező narrátor (nemtom, hány éves, legyen mondjuk negyvenes) kb. ugyanolyan elégikus stb. hangon szól, mint a másik regényben a hetvenes fazon. Nem hiszem el neki. És ha a hangot nem hiszem el, már rég cseszhetem az egészet.
(Lehet, hogy ugyanaz az író írta a két karaktert?)
(Lehet, hogy végül is mindenki csak egyféleképpen tud írni?)
