Marija Gimbutas: The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe Marija Gimbutas: The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe

European civilization between 6500 and 3500 BC – long before Greek or Judaeo-Christian civilizations flourished – was not a provincial reflection of neighboring Near Eastern cultures but a distinct culture with its own unique identity. The mythical imagery of this matrilinear era tells us much about early humanity's concepts of the cosmos, of human relations with nature, of the complementary roles of male and female. Through study of sculpture, vases, and other cult objects from southeastern Europe, Gimbutas sketches the village culture that evolved there before it was overwhelmed by the patriarchal Indo-Euopreans. The Goddess incarnating the creative principle as a Source and Giver of All, fertility images, mythical animals, and other artifacts are anlyzed for their mythic and social significance in this beautifully illustrated study.

Marija Gimbutas: The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe

Marija Gimbutas: The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe

Alig várom a következő könyvét!

The double-axe most likely represents the epiphany of the Great Goddess since she assumed the shape of a butterfly rising from the horns of a bull.

The Snake Goddess and the Bird Goddess appear as separate figures and as a single divinity. Their functions are so intimately related that their separate treatment is impossible. She is one and she is two, sometimes snake, sometimes bird. She is the goddess of waters and air, assuming the shape of a snake, a crane, a goose, a duck, a diving bird. The combination of a water snake and a water bird is a peculiarity of the Old European symbolism representing divine ambivalence.

Honey was always considered to be a food that conduces to a long and healthy life. Pythagoras, whose life spanned the greater part of the sixth century bc attributed his longevity to a constant use of honey in his diet. Honey was a healing substance. Glaucus, the son of Minos and Pasiphae, was restored to life when buried in a honey jar.

The tradition of sculpture and painting encountered in Old Europe was transmitted from the Palaeolithic era. In art and mythical imagery it is not possible to draw a line between the two eras, Palaeolithic and Neolithic, just as it is not possible to draw a line between wild and domestic plants and animals. Much of the symbolism of the early agriculturists was taken over from the hunters and fishers. Such images as the fish, snake, bird, or horns are not Neolithic creations; they have roots in Palaeolithic times. And yet, the art and myths of the first farmers differed in inspiration and hence in form and content from those of the hunters and fishers.

European civilization between 6500 and 3500 bc was not a provincial reflection of Near Eastem civilization, absorbing its achievements through diffusion and periodic invasions, but a distinct culture developing a unique identity. Many aspects of this culture remain to be explored. One of the main purposes of this book is to present, as it were, the spiritual manifestations of Old Europe. Mythical imagery of the prehistoric era tells us much about humanity – its concepts of the structure of the cosmos, of the beginning of the world and of human, plant and animal life, and also its struggle and relations with nature. It cannot be forgotten that through myth, images and symbols man comprehended and manifested his being.

A fully developed Neolithic culture and economy evolved by about 5500–5000 BC in the Middle Danube Basin and the foothills of the Carpathians. The earliest Neolithic assemblage representing the Linear Pottery culture ('Bandkeramik") of Central Europe and the related Alföld group in eastern Hungary reveal strong central Balkan (Late Starčevo and Early Vinca) influence.

The mysterious dynamism of the snake, its extraordinary vitality and periodic rejuvenation, must have provoked a powerful emotional response in the Neolithic agriculturists, and the snake was consequently mytho!ogized, attributed with a power that can move the entire cosmos.

The phallus, as well as ithyphallic vases and lids, is also accompanied by snake coils. The snake was stimulator and guardian of the spontancous life energy, and this anatomical association, so frequent that its symbolic meaning cannot be doubted, demonstrates the power that was attributed to bodily protuberances as its source.

The phallus, horns, snake, water bird, and water are closeIy interrelated in myth and cult. The mystery of life lies in water, in oceans, deep seas, lakes or rivers. Gods are born from water. Dionysus comes from water, as do the Bird Goddess, Athena, or Aphrodite. On pictorial Cucuteni vases and Tisza altars we see birdclawed or horned goddesses borne in the womb of mythical waters. The universal snake winds around the universal egg like a continuous flow of water. To the poets and philosophers of ancient Greece water was the primordial element, able to produce life, stimulate its growth and nurture it with damp warmth. This concept of the genesis of the universe from an elemental aqua-substance surely extends back in time to the Neolithic-Chalcolithic era.

The northern people in the hunting stage still believe in the mother of the universe as a doe-elk or wild reindeer-doe. Myths speak of pregnant women who rule the world and who look like deer: covered with hair and with branching deer’s horns on their heads (Anisimov 1959: 28, 49ff.; R yb ak o v 1965, 2 :35). In the Upper Paleolithic era, similar images probably existed all over Europe.
