Van négy nő. Tony, a mélynövésű háborús történész, Roz, az üzletasszony és Charis, az elvarázsolt New Age-es. Meg Zenia, mindenki legjobb barátnője, minden férfi álma, Zenia, a kígyó, a dög, Zenia, akiről nem beszélünk, akitől meg kell védenünk, ami az életünkből maradt, Zenia, aki halott.
Csak nem eléggé.
Öt évvel Zenia halála után a három barátnő beül egy ebédre, és az ajtón besétál Zenia. Gyönyörűen, megvetően és nagyon is elevenen.
Noha a könyv kétharmada a három nő szemszögéből követi végig ébredéstől kezdve a közös ebéd napját, feltárva mindegyiküknél a múltat, amelyet Zenia határoz meg (és az anyák), az ember úgy érzi, fejjel előre belezuhant négy ember életébe, és nem tud onnan kikeveredni. A függőségről szól ez a könyv, és az azzal való visszaélésről, meg a kontroll illúziójáról, ami kiszolgáltatja az embert annak, akinél erősebbnek véli magát.
A hideg, olykor kifejezetten ellenséges szülőkhöz való viszonyulás megágyaz Zenia hatásának, és félelmetes, hogy még akkor is, amikor az ember tudja, hogy mit tett Zenia, hogy ő a „gonosz” ebben a történetben, a varázslata alá bír kerülni. Akárcsak a szereplők. Akárcsak Charis, aki tudta, mit tett Zenia Tonyval, akárcsak Roz, akit már Tony és Charis példája is intett.
Mert mindenkihez megvan a kulcs, amivel minden ajtót el lehet nyitni benne, amivel ki lehet forgatni önmagából, át lehet verni, egy életre tönkretenni. Zenia megtalálta ezeket a kulcsokat. Nem azért, mert annyira okos (noha az), hanem mert ennyire figyelt.
Atwood pedig egy mester. Úgy rajzol fel alakokat, hogy a legapróbb részletekig hitelesek és élők. Ha elutaznék Kanadába, meg tudnám találni Tonyt, Rozt és Charist, annyira valóságosak. Különlegesek és mégis egészen intim módon közeliek. Olyanok, mint mi.

Játékos szöveg, mozaikszerű szövevények, szerethető szereplők és hitelesen valószínűtlen történet. Atwood remekül ír, és nagyon tetszik, ahogy nem veszi saját magát sem túlzottan komolyan ebben a könyvében, vagyis amellett, hogy az életről, az emberi viselkedésről és a nemek bonyodalmairól rengeteget átfuttat a történeten, még vicces is. Időnként ugyanazok a hülye szóviccek jutottak eszébe az elbeszélés során, amik nekem is, ez pedig kivételesen élvezetes bónusz.

Tony presents the eggs in two ceramic eggcups shaped like chickens that she picked up in France a few years ago. The French liked to make dishes in the shapes of the things that were going to be served in them; when it came to eating they rarely beat about the bush. Their menus read like a vegetarian’s nightmare – hearts of these, brains of that. Tony appreciates this directness. She has a French fish platter too, in the shape of a fish.

Maybe they couldn’t. Maybe that’s what was in that sealed tin can. Melted tits.
