Margaret Atwood: The Door Margaret Atwood: The Door

The Door, Margaret Atwood’s first book of poetry since her award-winning Morning in the Burned House, is a magnificent achievement. These fifty lucid, urgent poems range in tone from lyric to ironic to meditative to prophetic, and in subject from the personal to the political, viewed in its broadest sense. They investigate the mysterious writing of poetry itself, as well as the passage of time and our shared sense of mortality.
Brave and compassionate, The Door interrogates the certainties that we build our lives on, and reminds us once again of Margaret Atwood’s unique accomplishments as one of the finest and most celebrated writers of our time.

Margaret Atwood: The Door

The poets hang on.
It’s hard to get rid of them,
though lord knows it’s been tried.

The poet has come back to being a poet

Why is the tree dying?
It is dying for lack of truth.

Who has blocked up the wells of truth?
Those with the guns.

What if they kill all those with no guns?
Then they will kill one another.

When will there be compassion?
When the dead tree flowers.

When will the dead tree flower?
When you take my hand.

They know something, though.
They do know something.
Something they’re whispering,
something we can’t quite hear.
Is it about sex?
Is it about dust?
Is it about fear?

But it’s this beautiful woman who holds me,
dancing there on the ground
with such perfection.

Oh dead beautiful woman, if anyone
had the power to wrench me through despair
and arid helplessness
into the heart of prayer,
it would be you—

But you never would listen.
Think you’re some kind of poet.
Now look what you’ve done,
you and your damn line—
mucking around with creation.

You just had to fool with it.
You just can’t leave it alone.

The future will be both better than the past
and worse.
What future?
Your future,
which is implied in many futures.
What past?
Your past,
which is touched by many pasts.
Both your future and your past are in your head,
because where else could they be?
