Gentle by name, gentle by nature. Everyone in the sleepy Scottish town of Lochdubh adores elderly Mrs. Gentle – everyone but Hamish Macbeth, that is. Hamish thinks the gentle lady is quite sly and vicious, and the citizens of Lochdubh think he is overly cranky. Perhaps it's time for him to get married, they say.

But who has time for marriage when there's a murder to be solved? When Mrs. Gentle dies under mysterious circumstances, the town is shocked and outraged. Chief Detective Inspector Blair suspects members of her family, but Hamish Macbeth thinks there's more to the story, and begins investigating the truth behind this lady's gentle exterior.

M. C. Beaton: Death of a Gentle Lady

I wanted to know how this is in original, and it's a bit better than the Hungarian translation. (It still contains sentences that feel like thoughts MCB wanted to detail later.)
What I liked in this story is that it went farther than the whodunit, it had the added story of Blair's venom. It wasn't difficult to guess, and I felt there were a lot of side-tracks, not so neat and tense as a good Agatha Christie (well, no one ever lives up to her, but at least someone could try).
What made me groan is the constant importance of the animals. Why does MCB feel compelled to register each moment of those blasted things? I like and have pets too, but they should be included in the story only when they have some importance related to the given chapter.
I also felt the girls too much – this fiancé, that fiancé, shall I marry this, shall I marry that?
And I cringed when I saw the Russian names – how come neither the author, nor the publishing house doesn't know that most Russian family names end with -a for women?! (There are a few exceptions, but the male family names ending with -y *always* get -a or -aya ending in female form.)
Otherwise it's an OK summer read!
