Shards of Honor (The Vorkosigan Saga 2.) 1 csillagozás
Cordelia Naismith, Betan Survey Captain, was expecting the unexpected: hexapods, floating creatures, odd parasites… She was not, however, expecting to find hostile humans on an uninhabited planet. And she wasn't really expecting to fall in love with a 40-plus barbarian known to cosmopolitan galactics as the Butcher of Komarr.

It was all as false as her love affairs, except for the deaths. They were real.” He paused. “So you see, you Betans have one advantage. You at least permit each other to learn from your mistakes.”

“You’re asking me to judge you?” “Someone must.” “I’m sorry. I can love you. I can grieve for you, or with you. I can share your pain. But I cannot judge you.”
…they entered Vorkosigan’s office, his name and rank emblazoned over the smudge that had been his predecessor’s…
„A good thing I never wanted to be a defense lawyer. All my clients would be in therapy forever.”
“Not for a price. At a cost.”
“I fail to see the distinction.”
“A price is something you get. A cost is something you lose.
It had the same feel as Cordelia’s own room in her mother’s apartment, of frequent and prolonged disoccupation, with archeological layers of past passions stuffed into drawers and closets.
There were also three studies of a laughing young man labeled “Ges” that seemed hauntingly familiar. She mentally added forty pounds and twenty years to him, and the room seemed to tilt as she recognized Admiral Vorrutyer.
“Think of all the work he represents on somebody’s part. Nine months of pregnancy, childbirth, two years of diapering, and that’s just the beginning. Tens of thousands of meals, thousands of bedtime stories, years of school. Dozens of teachers. And all that military training, too. A lot of people went into making him.”
