Lisa Kleypas: Marrying Winterborne

“Hiraeth,” she repeated, trying to pronounce it with a tapped R, as he had.
“Aye. It’s a longing for something that was lost, or never existed. You feel it for a person or a place, or a time in your life . . . it’s a sadness of the soul. Hiraeth calls to a Welshman even when he’s closest to happiness, reminding him that he’s incomplete.”
Her brow knit with concern. “Do you feel that way?”
“Since the day I was born.” He looked down into her small, lovely face. “But not when I’m with you. That’s why I want to marry you.”

Teatime was a lavish affair, an indulgence the Ravenels had always maintained no matter what else might have to be sacrificed. A flowered porcelain tea service had been brought out on a heavy silver tray, along with three-tiered stands filled with crisp golden scones, mincemeat puffs, slices of sweet Damson cheese on toast, and tiny sandwiches filled with butter and cress, or egg salad. Every few minutes, a servant came to refresh the hot water or replenish the pitchers of milk and cream.

“You’re not going to live far away.”Pandora put her arms around her. “You and Charity are going to live with me. I’ll start earning money soon, lots of it, and I’ll buy a big house for us.”
Helen reached out to hug her close. “I think you’ll be a great success,”she murmured, and smiled as she felt Cassandra’s arms go around the both of them.
“I’m going to live with you too,”Cassandra said.
“Of course,”Pandora said firmly. “Who needs a husband?”

“I’m not going to kill you. Your valet will do that for me when he realizes you’ve ruined two bespoke shirts and a coat in one day.”
“I don’t—”
“Winterborne,” Devon warned softly, “you’ve insulted my wife, debauched my cousin, and now you’re delaying my dinner. This would be an excellent time to keep your mouth shut.”

“When did you become so damned accident-prone?”
“Since I began spending more time with my friends,” Rhys said acidly.
“I suppose it’s too much to hope that debris fell on Severin as well?” Devon asked.
“Not a scratch on him.”

Helen’s heart twisted with painful sweetness. She wanted badly to comfort and cradle him. Instead she had to settle for stroking his black hair very lightly. He pushed his head against the caress, like an affectionate wolf. Her palm moved along the side of his face to his jaw and down to the firm, perfect line of his good shoulder.
“It seems stable,”Devon said, sitting back on his heels. “I don’t think it’s been reinjured. Helen, if you continue to fondle the bastard right in front of me, I’ll have to dislocate his other shoulder.”

“When she asks a question of you, try to answer simply, and don’t be amusing. She doesn’t like wit.”
“We’ll do our best,” Pandora said. “But she already doesn’t like Cassandra and me. After we met her at the wedding, I heard her telling someone that we behaved like a pair of Bilberry goats.”
Kathleen continued to pace. “I wrote to her that you’d both become accomplished and well-mannered young ladies.”
“You lied?” Pandora asked, her eyes widening.
“We had just begun our etiquette lessons at the time,” Kathleen said defensively. “I assumed our progress would go a bit faster.”

“I have a hobby,” Pandora volunteered, speaking out of turn.
Lady Berwick turned to her with raised brows. “Indeed,” she said frostily. “What is it, my bold miss?”
“I’m making a board game. If it turns out well, I will sell it in stores, and earn money.”
(…)
“Does it not concern you,”she asked Pandora, “that this hobby, along with the distasteful desire to earn money, will alienate prospective suitors?”
“No, ma’am.”
“It should. Don’t you wish to marry?”
At Pandora’s lack of response, she pressed impatiently,
“Well?”
Pandora glanced at Kathleen for guidance. “Should I say the conventional thing or the honest thing?”
Lady Berwick replied before Kathleen was able. “Answer honestly, child.”
“In that case,”Pandora said, “No, I don’t wish to marry, ever. I like men quite well—at least the ones I’ve been acquainted with—but I shouldn’t like to have to obey a husband and serve his needs. It wouldn’t make me at all happy to have a dozen children, and stay at home knitting while he goes out romping with his friends. I would rather be independent.”

“It’s time to leave,”West said from the doorway. “Are you certain you don’t need me to accompany you to the station?”
Devon grinned at his brother. “Thank you, but the carriage will be crowded enough as it is. Moreover, I don’t want to take you away when you should be acting as host to Lady Berwick.”
“Quite right,”West replied blandly, but as he turned, he executed a discreet hand gesture meant only for Devon’s gaze.
“Kathleen,”Pandora said, “Cousin West did that thing with his finger again.”
“It was a hand cramp,”West said quickly, and shot a narrow-eyed glance at Pandora.
Kathleen grinned and went to put her arms around his neck. “West,”she said fondly, “whatever are you going to do when all of us leave you in peace?”
Sighing, West kissed her forehead. “I’ll miss you, damn it.”

“Come, it’s time to join the others in the entrance hall. Do you happen to have a pocket-mirror?”
“I’m afraid not. Why?”
“I’ve made you late, which means by now Lady Berwick has sprouted serpents from her head, and I can’t look at her directly.”
