Lisa Kleypas: Dream Lake

Vigyázat! Cselekményleírást tartalmaz.

Dream Lake takes readers once again to the exquisite setting of Friday Harbor, and tells the story of Zoӫ Hoffman, an innkeeper who has all but given up on love. She’s a gentle, romantic soul, but has been so hurt in the past that she dare not trust her heart with anyone. Especially not Alex Nolan. Alex is the most haunted of all the Nolan brothers.

He drinks to keep his demons at bay and not only has he given up on love, he has never, ever believed in it. Zoӫ and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow.

But sometimes, it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark. Dream Lake is classic Lisa Kleypas: romantic, powerful, emotional, and magical.

Lisa Kleypas: Dream Lake

A történet a másik két résszel párhuzamosan halad egy ideig. Alex alkoholista.
Tetszett.

“Don’t change your mind while I’m gone.”
“I can’t change my mind,” he said darkly. “I’ve already lost it.”

She always said “good morning” as if it actually were one. She set plates of beautiful food in front of him, every bite blooming with color and fragrance, flavors nudging each other forward in clever ways. Soufflés so light they seemed to have been inflated by a wish, eggs Benedict blanketed with hollandaise the color of sunflowers. She created symphonies of eggs and meat, poems of bread, melodies of fruit.

“You probably don’t even believe in a higher power.”
He shrugged. “Existentialism has always made a lot more sense to me than fate, God, or chance.”
“I’ve never been sure exactly what existentialism is,” Zoë confessed.
“It’s knowing the world is crazy and meaningless, so you have to find your own truth. Your own meaning. Because nothing else makes sense. No higher power, just human beings stumbling through life.”

The ghost scowled at him. “Look at yourself. You’re being haunted by a spirit. That’s about as unexistential as you can get. The fact that I’m with you means it doesn’t all end with death. And it also means that someone or something put me in your life for a reason.”
“Maybe you’re not a spirit,” Alex muttered. “You could be a figment of my imagination.”
“You have no imagination.”

“I … I’ve always hated spiders. They’re like … hairy wads of death on eight legs.”

“It’ll happen to you,” the ghost said, as if he could read Alex’s thoughts. “It’ll hit you like an ax someday. Some things in life, you can’t escape.”
“Three things,” Alex said unsteadily. “Death, taxes, and Facebook. But falling in love, I can definitely escape.”

Marigold had raised her only child as a free spirit, just as she had been. Sometimes she had taken Justine to attend festivals with odd names, such as the Beltane Bash or the Old Earth Gather. She had made food Zoë had never heard of before, things like Covenstead Bread with honey and citron, and Groundhog Day cake, and Half Moon cauliflower. After visiting distant relatives, Justine had returned with stories of participating in drumming circles and “drawing down the moon” rituals held in the forest at midnight.

“She’s not that bad.”
“Then why do I get the feeling when I talk to her that I’d be better off viewing her reflection from a mirrored shield?”
