Lily Morton: Short Stack

What happens after the happy ending?

Drawn together for the first time, this is a collection of Lily’s short stories about the much-loved men from her Mixed Messages and Finding Home series. Follow them through awkward marriage proposals, birthdays, a fraught babysitting job, and a very drunken Eurovision Song Contest party.

It includes stories previously written for her website and readers’ group, along with deleted scenes and four brand new and exclusive short stories – Bad Valentine, Marrying Jude, Babysitting Billy, and House Hunting.

Lily Morton: Short Stack

“What?”
“I want a photo of you doing vetty things.”
“Vetty things?”
“Don’t point your nose in the air like that. Try to look like a vet.”
“Oz, I am a vet,” he says faintly.
“Well, look more like one,” I instruct him. “Put the hat on and roll your sleeves up a bit more so I can see the veins on your forearms.” I pause. “Would it be okay for you to be bare-chested?” At his look of horror, I dismiss that. “No, you’re right. Shirtsleeves up and try to look moody rather than sleepy and grumpy.”
“I wasn’t aware when we set out tonight that I’d be re-enacting Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.”

“Bend forward,” he instructs me.
“Gabe, it’s a lovely thought, but sex and vomit should never go together.”
“So I can put the cloth on the back of your neck, you twat.”
I lean forward and feel the cold towel moving in tender strokes. “Sorry for ruining the night,” I say again.
“You didn’t,” he says, and there’s a chiding fondness in his voice. “We’re together, aren’t we?”
“Yes, but a bathroom—even one as posh as this—isn’t conducive to romance.”
“I think there are all types of romance,” he murmurs, the towel still moving over my neck. “This is just the real kind.”

“Shit.” Dylan opens his mouth to remonstrate, but Billy stirs, giving me his wide, gappy grin that always makes me feel a tiny bit happy.
“It’s alright, Uncle Gabe. Jude said that word the other night too.”
“Did he?” I’m vastly entertained. I thought Jude was the next best thing to child-rearing since Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. Billy nods earnestly.
“Yes, I went into the bedroom, and he was lying on top of Daddy, and he said shit really, really loudly.”
“Oh my God,” Dylan mutters.
I grin widely. “This is so interesting. Carry on, Billy.”

The tall, slender model waltzes up to me and gives me a close hug, taking the opportunity to grab my arse as he does it. I jump about a foot in the air. “Jesus, Malachi, have you ever heard about personal space?”
He smiles evilly. “Sounds like a brothel.”

“I just want to make a memory.”
I squeeze his leg. “I’ll go anywhere with you, and it will always be a memory, and if it goes wrong, then it’ll be an excellent funny story.”
“You’ve got a lot of Irish in you.”
“You can have a lot of it in you, if you carry on like this,” I say just to listen to him laugh.

“You’re so bloody clever.” He wrinkles his nose.
“I didn’t do much.”
“But you did it looking very clever,” I say soothingly, and he laughs.

John Donne said that no man is an island. It’s true because I think you’re more like a coral atoll to me. Harsh and unforgiving on someone trying to visit, but beautiful and vivid and teeming with life underneath.

I asked him once why he wouldn’t try for more, but he just shrugged before giving me one of those self-deprecating smiles and saying, “I can’t risk losing him. If I told him how I felt, he’d run and I can’t be without him in my life. Unfortunately, he’s also irreplaceable, and no one else matches up.”
At the time, I’d examined him like he was some sort of specimen in a lab. I remember wondering what kind of love spoils you for anyone else.
Now I know the answer — the real kind.

“You don’t know what I was going to say. I might have been asking if we could stop for some yoghurt.”
He blows a raspberry. “You hate yoghurt. You say it’s like sour milk.”
“I know it’s healthy,” I say earnestly. “But I still can’t get on with it.”
“It’s a dairy product. Not an ageing relative.”

“Dylan, really? Are you angry with me in some form or another?”
“No, why?”
“Because why else would you do this to me?”
“For fun,” he says and nods his head emphatically. There’s a somewhat messianic gleam in his eyes which usually only occurs at festivities like Christmas and birthdays.
“Oh, okay. Fun. Is this the Mitchell brand of fun where there’s a vague threat of violence if I don’t enjoy myself?”
He steps closer, and I inhale the scent of his shampoo. “It’s not a vague threat,” he whispers.
