Laura Tait – Jimmy Rice: The Night That Changed Everything

A The Night That Changed Everything okos és sziporkázó.

Laura: How do you describe our books to other blokes who ask what kind of books you write?

Jimmy: I used to really struggle with this. Because I didn’t read women’s fiction or watch rom coms, I was slightly embarrassed talking to lads about it. Then I watched When Harry Met Sally and I realized: rom coms can be pretty cool. Now at home it’s me who suggests watching them. I’ve also realized that women’s fiction, when it’s really done well, is just Nick Hornby for women. I love Nick Hornby, so that’s often how I describe it.

People say you don’t know what chemistry is until you have it, but I think it’s the other way around. You don’t know what chemistry is until you don’t have it.

‘That night was like the story of Christopher Columbus,’ I say. ‘He was actually on his way to Asia, trying to find a better route from Europe than the arduous journey across land, when he stumbled on an island in the Bahamas. That’s how he discovered America.’
I did my dissertation on the birth of the United States. I think this might be the first time it’s come in useful.
‘What’s your point?’ she says.
‘You’re my America.

I sit there, stunned. I cannot even begin to imagine. I realize now that Rebecca shuffled into me so that I couldn’t see her face, nor she mine, as she told the story. I squeeze her tight and say nothing, knowing that comforting words would only make her feel uncomfortable.

'I didn’t know how bad you were going to look,’ says Danielle. ‘I’ve been practising my Ugly Baby Face all morning in case you were a horror show.’
Jamie looks confused.
‘It’s the face you do when someone’s baby is ugly and you have to pretend it’s the most beautiful and precious thing you ever saw in your whole life,’ says Danielle.

‘You don’t have to do that.’ If there’s one thing I hate more than shopping, it’s shopping with other girls.

‘You work too hard,’ I tell him, and instantly regret it. Ben used to say that to me and it made me pity him that he didn’t have a job he cared about enough to want to work too hard.

…as an ex-girlfriend once pointed out, I’m a bit of an emotional express train, and I know Rebecca is more like a cross-country service that stops at every town. It’s another reason I fell in love with her. I’ve got bored of every girlfriend I ever had before Rebecca. I guess I like a challenge.
