First published in Norway in 1890, Hunger probes into the depths of consciousness with frightening and gripping power. Contemptuous of novels of his time and what he saw as their stereotypical plots and empty characters, Knut Hamsun embarked on „an attempt to describe the strange, peculiar life of the mind, the mysteries of the nerves in a starving body.” Like the works of Dostoyevsky, Hunger marks an extraordinary break with Western literary and humanistic traditions.

I had remarked so painfully that, whenever I had been hungry for any lenght of time, it was just as if my brains ran quite gently out of my head and left me with a vacuum – my head grew light and far off, I no longer felt its weight on my shoulders, and I had a consciousness that my eyes stared far too widely open when I looked at something.

Didn't I know exactly the big pawn-shop – my refuge in the dark evenings, with my blood sucking friend? One by one my possessions had vanished there – my little things from home – my last book. I liked to go there on auction days, to look on, and rejoyce each time my books seemed likely to fall into good hands. Magelsen, the actor, had my watch; I was almost proud of that.

It's autumn, the very carnival of transience; the roses have an inflamed flush, their blood-red colour tinged with a wonderfully hectic hue.

She came quickly over to me and held out her hand. I looked at her full of distrust. Was she doing this freely, with a light heart? Or was she doing it just to get rid of me? She put her arm around my neck, tears in her eyes. I just stood and looked at her. She offered me her mouth but I couldn't believe her, it was bound to be a sacrifice on her part, a means of getting it over with.
