Kelley Armstrong: Made to be Broken Kelley Armstrong: Made to be Broken

Nadia Stafford isn't your typical nature lodge owner. An ex-cop with a legal code all her own, she's known only as 'Dee' to her current employers: a New York crime family who pays her handsomely to bump off traitors. But when Nadia discovers that a troubled teenage employee and her baby have vanished in the Canadian woods, the memory of a past loss comes back with a vengeance, and her old instincts go into overdrive.

With her enigmatic mentor, Jack, covering her back, Nadia unearths sinister clues that point to an increasingly darker and deadlier mystery. Now, with her obsession over the case deepening, the only way Nadia can right the wrongs of the present is to face her own painful ghosts – and either bury them for good, or die trying. Because in her book, everyone deserves a chance. And everyone deserves justice.

Kelley Armstrong: Made to be Broken

Konkrétan a „végső leszámolásnál” körömrágás helyett hangosan röhögtem. Amivel nem is lenne baj, csak szerintem az írónő komolyan gondolta. Összességében azért élveztem a történetet, csak nem annyira, mint az első részt.

Damn him. One of these days, I was going to be the first hitman killed by verbal shorthand.

Connie>!

You know what it's like getting him to talk, one fucking word at a time, dragged out like teeth.

„Gonna drive. Up all night. Should sleep.” Out of practice with Jack's habit of dropping pronouns – and any other words he deemed nonessential – it took a minute to realize he meant that I'd been up all night so I should get some sleep while he drove.

„I didn't know Jack fished.”
„He doesn't, apparently, but Owen offered to show him how and he agreed to give it a shot.” She pulled the foil from the dish, steam billowing up.
„Actually, it was more like: 'You fish?' 'Nah.' 'Wanna try?' 'Sure.' At least they won't scare the fish away with their chattering.”

Rule one of breaking and entering: check the goddamned house for people!

Connie>!

„Fucking assholes. Shouldn't have to deal with that.”
„It's part of the job,” I said as I locked the equipment closet.
„They get worse? I'll take care of them. Got lots of woods. Never find the bodies.”

Connie>!

„Do you think he could have made us?” I said. „If he knows we're tailing him, this is the perfect place to get us out and separated.”
„Yeah.”
„Yeah?”
„Thought about that. Was going to mention it.”
„When? As I'm running after him? Were you going to shout after me, 'Oh, by the way, this could be a trap'?”
„Nah. Hate shouting.”

Connie>!

Damn. Don't expect. Don't even hope. View all options with equal dispassion. Easy for Jack to say – the guy who viewed everything with dispassion.

Connie>!

„Ah. Okay, so he wants an excuse to pop around before he heads home, and you told him no – ”
„Nah.”
„Fine, you told him 'nah.' ”

Connie>!

„Oh, I bet he's offering. Since day one, that boy's been panting after you like a junkyard mutt smelling his first bitch in heat.”
„Colorful…”
„But true.”
