What do you do when your soulmate turns out to be a thief? Steal her, of course. Phoenix was raised within the Community, a gang of thieves with paranormal powers, under the control of a harsh master known as the Seer. The notion that there's a soulmate out there for every person with a paranormal gift is mere myth in Phoenix's world. That is until the Seer gives Phoenix the details of her next target, Yves Benedict. He's more than just her next victim, he is her destiny. To be together, Phoenix must break away from the Community but resistance against the Seer puts them both in mortal danger. Phoenix has never trusted anyone before, now it's time to trust Yves with her life

Joss Stirling: Stealing Phoenix

Still my favourite part out of the six books in this series.

'You may wonder why we are all present to hear the news.’
I hadn’t been, but he was right. It was a bit odd to have such a private moment shared before so many.
‘You’re nosy?’

‘Humility—that’s what I need—someone who will challenge me about what it means to be intelligent. Someone who will test my control. I thought I wanted to go through life all calm and even-tempered; now I realize I need that fire or I’ll never feel the sparks. I think—I hate to admit it—but I was in danger of turning bland. I’d be wearing cardigans before I was thirty if you hadn’t come along.

‘I thought I wanted someone like me—I was fairly shallow in my choices: a college girl, American prom queen material, someone who likes tennis and books.’
‘I can do books, but tennis?’ I snorted.
‘But I play a mean game. I’ll have to teach you.’ His fingers brushed gently at the curve of my waist and hip. ‘Though I should warn you: Zed sees it as another sign of my lack of machismo.’ ‘How?’ ‘Because the players wear whites, don’t need a helmet and can’t go dumping the other guy on the ground.’

‘So you don’t want to hear my analysis of Hamlet and The Lion King?’
Sky folded her arms. ‘Nope.’
Yves gave a put-upon sigh. ‘Yes, boss.’
‘You will, however, make us microwave popcorn.’ Yves stood up and saluted. He then leaned over me to whisper:
‘She’s small but dangerous—just thought you should know if you’re going to be friends.’
‘We are friends,’ Sky said firmly. ‘And you are standing in the way of the screen.’
‘Yes, ma’am.’ Yves scooted off into the kitchen.

‘Dangerous smangerous,’ scoffed Xav. ‘We eat evil Savants for breakfast in our family.’
Victor clipped him over the head. ‘Stop fooling, Xav. She won’t think we take this seriously if you clown around.’
‘Lighten up, bro. Phee knows I’m a sensible soul at heart.’
‘I do?’ He began peeling the orange.
‘Don’t sound so sceptical. You’ll dent my confidence.’
‘I doubt even being run over by a rubbish truck would dent your confidence.’

‘So you got Phoenix back,’ declared Karla, clapping her hands in delight. ‘That’s lovely.’
‘I’m more on loan,’ I muttered.
‘Yeah, my little library book.’

‘If you’re going to hurt someone,’ said Xav as he filled the kettle, ‘I’d really prefer it to be my brother.’

‘Are you going to return to the conference?’ Yves shook his head.
‘Got more important things to sort out now.’
‘Jo and Ingrid are going to be disappointed.’
‘Jo and Ingrid?’ laughed Xav. ‘And here was I thinking these conferences were all for guys who looked like Brains out of Thunderbirds. I got you all wrong, bro. I should’ve paid more attention in class.’
‘There is no inverse correlation between beauty and intelligence,’ Yves threw back at him.
‘Ooo, long words.’ Xav chucked a crisp at him. ‘Sorry, a dumbo like me needs a translation.’ Yves rolled his eyes.
‘Pretty girls can be clever too. In fact, they often are.’
‘So why didn’t you say that first time?’

When she answered me telepathically, it all kind of clicked. More than that—my whole centre of gravity shifted to her, you know?’
