'Yeah, her taste in men is terrible, but there you go…' Marcus made a single-finger gesture at Michael.

We arrived at the bus to find Kurt already in occupation of the sofa.
‘Hey, lovebirds, how’s it going?’ he asked, running a few chord changes. ‘Excited about tonight?’
‘Thrilled.’ I sat down opposite him and hugged my knees to my chest.
‘Great: we’ve got Angel back and not her scary evil twin who stopped by this morning.’ I threw a cushion at him. Marcus’s gaze swung between us.
‘You know you treat each other like brother and sister, don’t you?’
‘You’re not another of my dad’s strays I suppose, love?’ asked Kurt with a cheeky grin.
‘Nope—I guess it’s just that plain old recognizing-another-clown-when-I-see-one thing.’
‘No one has accused me of being a clown since … well since for ever.’
‘That’s what you need me for, Kurt: keeping it real.

Am I safe to let go? No underhand plans to steal my Stetson? It was given to me by a real cowboy in Texas, you know.’
‘I’ll leave it—for now.’ I squeaked as he tickled me in punishment.
‘I just think it would suit me.’
‘It would swallow you up. All we would see is a little pair of feet shuffling along.’
‘Big-head!’
‘My point exactly. I’ll get a midget-sized one for you when we go on tour to the States in September.’ He squeezed my hand as we linked up to carry on walking.

'But you hate me like I am normally.’
He bumped my shoulder. ‘No I don’t. It’s like the song says: it’s a case of stay away, come closer. You confuse me.’
‘You confuse me too.’

‘Heard you weren’t bad yesterday, AC,’ Al remarked, filling out a pass for my companion. ‘Caught a little of it on TV. Your band doesn’t suck.’
‘Thanks, Al.’
Will nudged me as we walked past the checkpoint. ‘What was that —an insult?’
‘With Al, that was high praise indeed.’
‘You Brits are one weird nation.’

'He can be so retro in his attitude to girls. You shouldn't have to put up with stupid stuff like that.'
'Oh, don't get me wrong: I don't put up with it; I stomp on retro males and dance on their graves.'

'Why aren't you answering my texts?' I lowered my voice to a dramatic whisper. 'Because I am on a secret mission behind enemy lines and can't risk exposing my cover.' Misty gurgled with laughter. 'Yeah, right. Or maybe you forgot to put your phone on charge?'
'That might be a possibility.'
