Introverted scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has spent the last few months watching his lover, Griffin Flaherty, come to terms with the rejection of his adoptive family. So when an urgent telegram from Christine summons them to Egypt, Whyborne is reluctant to risk the fragile peace they've established. Until, that is, a man who seems as much animal as human tries to murder Whyborne in the museum.

Amidst the ancient ruins of the pharaohs, they must join Christine and face betrayal, murder, and a legendary sorceress risen from the dead. In the forge of the desert heat, the trio will either face their fears and stand together – or shatter the bonds between them forever.

Jordan L. Hawk: Necropolis

Hát a kettő együtt!

Újabb kaland ami Egyiptomba sodorja a kis csapatot.

A románc szál még most is fejlődik, aminek végtelenül örülök.
A könyv legnagyobb erőssége most a humora.

“I’ve always held humans are the stupidest of animals.” Christine cast us a rueful grin. “We’ve no notion when to turn and run screaming.”

My fez still lay beside my pallet, so Daisy only mournfully mouthed my hair while I checked her over for wounds.

“This…well, I won’t pretend it doesn’t worry me. Daphne is my sister and my responsibility. If either of you wish to turn back, I wouldn’t think any less of you.”
“Of course you would!” I gave her an incredulous look. “You’d march in there alone, cursing our names with every step. Your last words would be, ‘Too bad Whyborne couldn’t be bothered to come, the coward. I could really have used his help.’ You’d pray there really is an afterlife so you could return to haunt me. Probably stand in the corner of my office and glare, or make the walls at home bleed, or some such nonsense.”
She tried to look vexed, but laughter won out. “Well, yes,” she admitted. “But it sounded noble, didn’t it?”
“You sounded like a character out of the terrible adventure fiction Griffin loves to read,” I replied as I shouldered my pack. “Really, do you think we’d come this far only to cower with the camels while you go to face ghūls and whatever else this accursed place holds? I hope you have a higher opinion of us.”
“Honestly, Whyborne, you do take the wind out of one’s sails."

“Father gave me a child-sized pair of boxing gloves one Christmas.” I hadn’t thought of those in years.
Griffin arched a brow. “Did he? That seems…an unlikely gift.” A charitable way of saying I wasn’t the most athletic of men.
“He had unrealistic hopes,” I muttered, glaring at the tree. I itched to speak the words which would set it on fire, but burning down the house seemed a bit much. Even on Christmas.

“Oh honestly, Whyborne, don’t put up such a fuss. I swear, you men have your entire egos tied to the functioning of a few inches of flesh.”
“More than a few,” Griffin said with a smirk. I buried my face in my hands and wished the mummy’s curse were real and might strike me down immediately.
“I don’t want to know, and implore you not to say anything further,” Christine responded.
“I thought nothing shocked you.”
Christine snorted. “Whyborne is my brother, by choice if not by blood. I wish him all happiness, but have no desire to know any details.”
“Would you both please stop talking?” I begged. “Tell Daphne I’m dead. Over here. Killed by apoplexy thanks to the two people closest to me. Perhaps she can speak a phrase from the Coffin Texts over my corpse.”
“Good gad, you’re so melodramatic,” Christine exclaimed. “Have it your way. I won’t say anything.”

“I couldn’t help but notice how well you two chaps fought together. I suppose you must practice a great deal, to be so attuned to one another’s movements?”
My face grew uncomfortably hot, and I prayed he couldn’t make it out in the firelight.
“Yes,” Griffin said. “We practice every chance we have.”
Christine turned her laugh into a cough, although not very successfully.

“I know you’ve been sad about losing your adoptive parents, though,” I said.
“Of course I have.” He tugged me closer. “I think it only natural, don’t you?”
“Yes. But I hate seeing you unhappy.”
“I know. As I hate seeing you unhappy whenever you come from visiting your father. I grieved for my relationship with Ma and Pa, and the rest of the family. But grief is part of life. Not something you have to fix for me.” He sighed. “You’ve been my rock through all of this, the one person in the world I knew would never let me down. You’ve already given me everything I need.”
“Oh.” I felt a little foolish, but mostly relieved.
