John Cheever's letters offer a tantalising glimpse into the life of a writer. They include correspondence with his contemporaries, such as Philip Roth, John Updike and Saul Bellow, his days as a young, aspiring writer and his battles with bisexuality and alcoholism. In this collection, edited by his son Benjamin Cheever, we see how his private correspondence was as extraordinary as his published works.

I was envious of my companion's gifts as a writer, and was asking him about his journal. We had both kept joirnals for some time. „Did you ever notice,” I said, „that you never know what's important? You write down what you think is important, but when you look back a couple of years later you realize that you've recorded a dispute you were having with the plumber, and haven't mentioned a near-fatal automobile accident.” He nodded. „Also, I sometimes use a sort of shorthand,” he said.
