The Life and Times of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey
Jessie Childs: Henry VIII's Last Victim

A pioneering poet whose verse had a profound impact on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, Surrey was nevertheless branded by one contemporary as “the most foolish proud boy that is in England.” He was the heir of England’s premier nobleman, first cousin to two of Henry VIII’s wives—Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard—and best friend and brother-in-law to the King’s illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy.

Celebrated for his chivalrous deeds both on and off the battlefield, Surrey became, at only twenty-eight, the King’s Lieutenant General in France. He had his portrait painted more often than any other Tudor courtier, but his confident exterior masked insecurity and loneliness. A man of intriguing contradictions, Surrey was both law enforcer and law breaker, political conservative and religious reformer. The self-styled guardian of the traditional nobility, he was recklessly outspoken against the “new erected men” of the court. Cromwell was a “foul churl,” Paget a “mean… (tovább)

Jessie Childs: Henry VIII's Last Victim The Life and Times of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey

Surrey had no weapon at hand so he resorted to a poverb that his father sometimes usa to belittle the authority of his critics: 'God sent a shrewd cow short horns.'

There rivalry was not just about the policy, it was personal, it was deadly and it was dirty. Cromwell had tried on several occasions to engieener the destruction of the Howards, most dangerously during the Pilgrimage of Grace and most recently after the execution of the Marquis of Exeter in December 1538, when news had reached Norfolk that Cromwell had examined Exeter's wife 'more straitly of m than all of other men in the realm'. Outwardly Norfolk bore the face of friendship. Indeed he was shamelessly unctuous, assuring his enemy in 1535 that 'you shall ever find me a faithful, assured friend, grudge who will', while in March 1539 he informed Cromwell that it was no longer necessary for him to address him as 'Your Grace' in his letters 'for surely it is not conventient that of your sort should so do'. All the while, though, Norfolk was biding his time.

Noble birth is like a bright lamp that makes clear and visible both good deeds and bad, and inspires and incites to high oerformance ad mush as fear of dishonor or hope of praise; and since their deeds do not possess such noble brilliance, ordinary people lack both this stimulus and the fear of dishonor; nor do they belive that they are bound to surpass what was achieved by their forebears. Whereas to people of noble birth it seems reprehensible not to attain at least the standard set them by their ancestors.

Surrey' vaunting of a noble identity, in life and in poetry, is, in part, his attempt to convey the requisite 'brilliance' and stave off the 'fear of dishonor'.
