She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.

She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. Jennifer L. Armentrout: Fire in You

Akárcsak Avery, ő is teljesen bezárkózott. Aztán Brock feltörte a zárat.

Avery rolled her eyes. “He’s going to be one of those dads. You know? The kind that cleans a shotgun in front of the boys Ava dates.”
Teresa arched a brow. “Does Cam even own a gun?”
“No, but I bet he will once Ava hits sixteen.”

“Why in the hell is this inappropriate?” “Because—because you’re my boss.”
“I am not just your boss. Have you forgotten that I literally had to carry you upstairs and put you to bed after you got into your dad’s liquor cabinet and drank for the first time?” he asked. “Or the fact that you’ve been there for me, for some of the darkest moments of my life? Helping me change into clean clothes because I was too fucked up on pain meds and alcohol to even know what year I was in?”

I stopped.
Time stopped.
Everything stopped except my heart, because it was suddenly pounding in my chest too hard, too fast. That deep, rough voice. I recognized it all the way to my very core. Slowly, I lifted my gaze, already knowing what I was going to see but refusing to believe it. Brock Mitchell stood in front of me.

I missed this—missed having someone in my life who knew me inside and out, because no one, no one knew me like Brock had.

“An art exhibit? That sounds . . . stimulating.” The mocking, teasing tone pricked at my nerves. “Yes. I’m going with Grady.” “Grady? That little guy you were at dinner with?” Little guy? “He’s not little.” “He’s little.” “Maybe compared to your gigantic, Godzilla-sized self, he’s little, but by normal human standards, he’s not.”
A smirk graced his full mouth as he leaned back in the chair at the head of the table.
"I always thought you liked my gigantic, Godzilla-sized self. If I remember correctly, you loved that I could pick you up and throw you several feet in the air and into the pool.” He tapped the corner of his lips. “And I could do that because of my size.” My cheeks flushed as I hastily glanced over my shoulder, grateful that none of the employees were anywhere near the conference room.
"Yeah, well, I’m not ten anymore, Brock.” “Huh.” He folded his arms on the table and leaned forward. “I also clearly remember doing that when you were twenty.”

I had been Brock’s shadow since I was eight and he was fourteen. Most boys his age would’ve been annoyed with a girl snapping at his heel every waking second he was around her, but Brock never made me feel like I was unwanted or that he was annoyed. In spite of our age difference, he’d become my closest friend. When my uncles or cousins didn’t want me tagging along, he was there to stand up for me and always made sure I was included. He talked to me about things—about his father and his mother—things I knew he spoke to no one else about, especially the girls he hooked up with. We shared secrets and stories. When high school became . . . became hard, he was a shelter whenever I saw him. He never treated me a certain way because of who my father was or what my family did. And when every guy at my school had been too afraid to ask me out because of said crazy family, it had been Brock who had escorted me to my senior prom after I’d said I wasn’t going.
I smiled at the memory.

“Hey, I’m just being honest. Plus, the six of us could grab dinner afterward. One big happy date.”
Now both of my brows were inching up my forehead.
He chuckled as he sat back in his chair. “If only you could see the look on your face right now. Cute.”
"Very cute,” he murmured.

Some people were born with fire in them. They burned intensely bright, full of fiery drive and ambition for everything and everyone, but never fully committing one hundred percent to any one thing. They have that fire, but they burn out halfway through life, forever dwelling on what should have been and never what could have been. Others have the same kind of fire in them from the start, their hunger and determination to succeed the cornerstone of every decision and choice they make. Their flame may flicker, but it never goes out. They never focus on what they should have in life, but focus on what they could have. Then there were people who didn’t realize they had that fire, that it lay kindled inside them, needing to be stoked into flame. I never would’ve believed that I had that fire, but I did, and sometimes it would flicker and fade and other times it would rage and burn. But it would never be extinguished.
