Bár VanderMeerrel még nem találtunk egymásra a regényei terén, úgy gondoltam, hátha az írástechnikai könyve jobban eltalál – és igazam is lett.
Ami plusz:
● Bár az alapoktól kezd és tényleg kezdő íróknak is való, azért nem nézi hülyének az olvasót, és tényleg belemélyed dolgokba. Noha nem technikai dolgokban mélyül el, de írói szemléletében azért rendesen feltárja a dolgokat, így érdekes és inspiráló lesz. Kifejezetten szerettem az inspirációról szóló részt, ahol bemutatja, hogy mennyi behatás éri az írót, amiből öntudatlanul is formálódnak a történetek. Rettenetesen validáló volt, hogyan látja a világot VanderMeer.
● Miután rengeteg kezdőknek való, „paint-by-the-numbers” könyvet olvastam, amik egy átlagos sémát húznak rá a regényekre, amitől a visítozó kezdő írók ki vannak akadva (erre később visszatérek), ez rettenetesen üdítő volt, vagy mondjuk úgy, már a következő szint, ha megvannak az alapok: hogyan lehet ezeket a sémákat másként használni. Kifejezetten tetszett a Campbell-féle heroes's journey „ellenszere,” illetve, hogyan meríthetünk máshonnan történeti struktúrákat. Illetve felszabadító volt azt olvasni, hogy oké, kísérletezz vegyes zsánerű dolgokkal, még akkor is, ha nem lesz olvasható vagy nem lesz közönsége. Igazán érdekes volt azt látni, hogyan nyúlnak neves írók is mesterien a kezdéshez, hogy a zsáner elvárásokat kikerüljék – mert ennyire számít a kezdés, illetve mennyi munka és gondos tervezés van mögötte, hogy a felütés mennyit számít olvasói elvárásban.
● Visszatérve a sivalkodó kezdő írókra: Rengeteg sztori struktúra könyvnél olvastam kritikának, hogy „jajj, hát egyfajtaképpen lehet csak megírni ezek szerint egy sztori, de hülye ötlet ez,” meg mennyire korlátozó, és az ő zsenijüket nem fogják holmi szabályok elnyomni. Szerintem egy nagyon kezdőnek, akinek semmi nem megy, igenis kell, hogy rálátása legyen egy alap sémára, hogy legalább eljusson a tudatáig, hogy van a történeteknek felépítése, és hogyan lehet azokon csavarni. VanderMeer mindenhol úgy áll hozzá, hogy bár nem hisz a nagyon sablonos struktúra dolgokban, de mégis kell valami rendezettség.
● Ami máshol a beat sheetekből jön ki, hogy mitől lesz unalmas a sztori, VanderMeer érdekesen (számomra) az ismétlésekhez vezeti vissza. Míg ez a „he said, she said” tageknél egy kellő láthatatlanságot nyújt, úgy a jeleneteknél nem, és ezért tűnik unalmasnak egy történet.
● Fantasy, sci-fi és weird írók előnyben ennél a könyvnél.
● Összességében rendesen levezeti az alapokat karaktereknél, szerkesztésnél, világfelépítésnél és a narratív elemeknél, de úgy érzem, ahogy haladt előre, úgy mondott egyre kevesebbet a témában.
A negatív:
● Néhány esszé totál felesleges és semmit sem mond, főleg a befejezésekről írt Desirina Boskovich – kb. ez arról szólt, hogy jajj, vágjuk el, sose legyen rendesen befejezve. (Elég céltalan és összevissza írás volt ez.) Valente meg a rasszizmus :DDD – nevetséges, kár volt. G. R. R. Martint beállítani, mint a fantasy istenét szintén értelmetlen, hiszen ő inkább low fantasy, mint világfelépítős, de mindegy.

Whenever I am tempted to say to myself, „By the time he was my age, Büchner had been dead for forteen years,” I instead look at whatever I am writing and say to myself, „This isn't quite as bad as The Celestine Prophecy.”

Fair warning, though: The average person wastes three years of their life reading generic character mannerisms. Too often writers use „she sighed and crossed her arms” or „he cracked his knuckles” just as placeholders in narrative – a sop to the idea that there must be some description of what the character is doing during a scene.

One of the first tasks of the writer, I have found, and not the easiest, is forgiveness: You must forgive yourself for writing crap first drafts. Perform whatever ritual of absolution you have to, but do that for yourself. Only once you've forgiven yourself can you being the serious work of writing, which isn't writing at all. It's revising.
