Posztmodern szerzők előszeretettel nyúlnak jól ismert, klasszikus történetekhez, égve a vágytól, hogy valami újat tegyenek hozzá, esetleg a mai olvasó ízlésére hangolják. Egyeseknek sikerül, másoknak kevésbé. A kevésbé sikerült átdolgozásoknál mindig fennáll a gyanú, hogy a saját, önálló mondanivalót igyekezett pótolni az író a régi klasszikus leporolásával. Csak a legkiválóbbak engedhetik meg maguknak, hogy a görcsös „valami fontosat akarok mondani” kényszerén felülemelkeve, könnyű, de biztos kézzel nyúljanak egy korábbi alkotáshoz. Éppen ez a könnyedség teszi aztán lehetővé, hogy olyan írás szülessen, ami méltó emléket állít eredetijének, de egyszersmind túl is lép rajta. Winterson épp elégszer bizonyította már, hogy tele van önálló gondolatokkal, nem szorul tehát egy másik mű támaszára, és valóban, a Weight-ben feldolgozott Atlasz-mítosz önálló életre kel, miközben mégis hű marad a többezer éves görög verzióhoz.

Az eddigi egyetlen Winterson-regény, ami tetszett – úgy a 2/3-áig. 150 oldal, abból 30 üres, de még így is szörnyen túl van írva.

Looking at the glowing globe, I thought that if I could only keep on telling the story, if the story would not end, I could invent my way out of the world. As a character in my own fiction, I had a chance to escape the facts. There are two facts that all children need to disprove sooner or later; mother and father. If you go on believing in the fiction of your own parents, it is difficult to construct any narrative of your own.
In a way I was lucky. I could not allow my parents to be the facts of my life. Their version of the story was one I could read but not write. I had to tell the story again.
