In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author, what looked like a lover’s quarrel turned fatal has larger—and more terrifying—motives behind it…

The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wineglasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body—but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within—and soon they’re getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a… (tovább)

J. D. Robb: Faithless in Death

“We can’t help people who don’t want help.”

Commanding, he thought, she managed commanding even with a half-eaten slice of pepperoni pizza in her hand.

“If I can build it, I can break it. It starts with the walls.”

A sorozat megszokott hülyeségei persze most is a helyükön voltak, ettől függetlenül jó volt. Szórakoztatott és kikapcsolt, és most pont erre volt szükségem.

Peabody thought it over. “My bullshit detector’s pretty good, but I’ll cop yours is better.”

You can’t count on luck, but you use it when it falls in your lap.

I know Peabody will put her crafty-girl hat on, and probably knit a sofa or something…

They’d wiped her data because nobody would notice or care. Because they could.
And they’d made her invisible.
Wasn’t it another kind of murder? You could still breathe, walk, talk, eat, sleep. But you no longer existed because someone killed your identity.

“You can brief over pizza,” Roarke said. “Your troops need a meal, Lieutenant.”
She wanted to object, maybe would have, but he’d said the magic word.
Pizza.

“Here’s what we’re going to do. You know the system.”
“I do indeed. Or, more accurately, the systems, as there are three systems combined—intertwined, and in layers. It’s very well done.”
“You’re not going to explain it all to me or we’ll be here for a month. What you’re going to do is look at this—the systems—and the main house, to start, like it has a zillion hot white diamonds inside, and you want them. You’re going to figure out how you’d get in, get to every one of these buildings, and steal the shit out of them.”
His lips curved slowly. “Well then, wouldn’t that be fun?”
“It’s just you and me here, ace. Find the weak spots, and be a thief.”

Roarke took a moment in the next timed gap, shut off their recorders.
“What the—”
“I have to say it. My Christ, what a pair we’d have been.”
The absolute delight in his voice tickled her soft spots.
“You move like smoke, smoke with nerves of steel and unshakable focus. We’d have romped the globe, you and I, plucking every precious thing we wanted. What a pity we didn’t meet in some lovely alternate world where you weren’t a cop.”
Though amused, she gave him a dour stare. “I’m a cop in all of them.”
“You’re likely right. And still.”

“If we’ve completed the socializing portion of the program, maybe we can turn to murder, abductions, torture, and human trafficking.”
“They go so well with burgers.”
