Thomas Lang is a James Bond for the 1990s, with the same ingredients, but brought bang up-to-date, and with much better jokes. Cold-blooded murder just isn't Thomas Lang's cup of tea. Offered a tidy sum to assassinate an American industrialist, he opts to warn the intended victim instead – a good deed that soon takes a bad turn.
Quicker than he can down a shot of his favourite whiskey, Lang is bashing heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting his life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femmes fatales. Up against rogue CIA agents, wanna-be terrorists, and an arms dealer looking to make a high-tech killing, Lang's out to save the leggy lady he has come to love – and prevent an international bloodbath to boot.

Fárasztottak a poénok, a sok technikai leírás a fegyverekről. A cselekménye elég bonyolult ahhoz képest, hogy konnyed szórakoztatást kínál. A szerelmi szál nem meggyőző. A vége mondjuk tetszett.

„a ripping spoof of the spy genre”, mondja a Vanity Fair.

Könnyű olvasmány, félúton a paródia felé. Száraz humor, erős (ön)irónia, itt-ott kicsit kaotikus a történet szövése.

I was feeling sorry for myself. Sorry for Mike Lucas, sorry for the beggars too, but very sorry indeed for myself, and that had to stop. I started to walk home.
I no longer had any reason to worry about being at the flat, since all the people I'd had breathing down my neck over the last week were now breathing in my face. The chance to sleep in my own bed was just about the only good thing to come out of all this. So I strode out for Bayswater at a good pace, and as I walked, I tried to see the funny side.
It wasn't easy, and I'm still not sure that I managed it properly, but it's just something I like to do when things aren't going well. Because what does it mean, to say that things aren't going well? Compared to what? You can say: compare to how things were going a couple of hours ago, or a couple of years ago. But that's not the point. If two cars are speeding towards a brick wall with no brakes, and one car hits the wall moments before the other, you can't spend those moments saying that the second car is much better off than the first.
Death and disaster are at our shoulders every second of our lives, trying to get us. Missing, a lot of the time. A lot of miles on the motorway without a front wheel blow-out. A lot of viruses the slither trough our bodies without snagging. A lot of pianos that fall a minute after we've passed. Or a month, it makes no difference.
So unless we're going to get down on our knees and give thanks every time disaster misses, it makes no sense to moan when it strikes. Us, or anyone else. Because we're not comparing it with anything. And anyway, we're all dead, or never born, and the whole thing really is a dream.
There, you see. That's the funny side.
