Helen Keeble: Fang Girl

Things That Are Destroying Jane Greene’s Undead Social Life Before It Can Even Begin:

1) A twelve-year-old brother who’s convinced she’s a zombie.
2) Parents who are begging her to turn them into vampires.
3) The pet goldfish she accidentally turns instead.
4) Weird superpowers that let her rip the heads off of every other vampire she meets.(Sounds cool, but it doesn’t win you many friends.)
5) A pyschotic vampire creator who’s using her to carry out a plan for world domination.

And finally:
6) A seriously ripped vampire hunter who either wants to stake her or make out with her. Not sure which.

Being an undead, eternally pasty fifteen-year-old isn’t quite the sexy, brooding, angst-fest Jane always imagined….

Helen Keeble’s riotous debut novel combines the humor of Vladimir Tod with Ally Carter’s spot-on teen voice. With a one-of-a-kind vampire mythology and an irresistibly relatable undead heroine, this uproarious page-turner will leave readers bloodthirsty for more.

Helen Keeble: Fang Girl

Just because I like vampires doesn’t mean I’m stupid. Okay, so my bookcase groans under the weight of paperbacks with moody black-and-red covers. So I’ve seen every episode of Buffy and The Vampire Diaries three times over. So I hang out a lot at—the fansite for all things vampire. But despite all that, I don’t mistake fantasy for reality. I never, not once in all my fifteen years, thought vampires were actually real.
Until, of course, I woke up dead, six feet underground, in my coffin. That’ll convince pretty much anyone.

(első mondat)

As a vampire, I solemnly swear I will not:
1) Angst
2) Suck
3) Summon a dark goddess
4) Fall in love with a vampire hunter
a) Or a werewolf
b) Or anyone evil, no matter how hot
c) Or anyone of a species not approved of by my vampire elders, because no one is worth that sort of stress
5) Accept any gifts, give any gifts, carry any messages, take part in any mysterious rituals, etc. etc.

He stayed motionless as my fingers walked along the line of my books, motionless as I drew one out….
And then he did move, because my hardcover copy of Breaking Dawn whacked him full in the face, with all my vampiric strength propelling it.

I was a vampire, and… someone was trying to call me?
When my parents had said that not even death could pry me from my mobile phone, I'd thought they were joking. I wriggled around in the narrow coffin until I could reach the ringing handset.

We were alone. He was a boy vampire. I was a girl. According to my novels, now we would gaze soulfully into each other’s eyes and discover an irresistible life-bond connection, possibly ccompanied by hot yet chaste psychic sex.

It was the vampire hunter. The really hot one with the paper-clip obsession. Guess he’d upgraded his weaponry.

“You read my fanfic?”
He went bright red. “Er, ah, I … I only wanted to learn what you liked.” He looked mortified, as if he’d been caught watching porn. Then again, if he’d been reading some of the spicier fanfic forums … “So I could make a good impression.”

Boglinc P>!

According to the date on Van’s driver’s license, he was seventeen. Somehow he’d looked a lot older when he’d been trying to cut my head off.

Boglinc P>!

“You can’t hurt him. He’s an endangered species!”
“Vampires are not endangered.” Van’s tone made it clear that it was his life’s work to rectify this regrettable situation.
“No, not that,” Zack said dismissively. “He’s a Victorian!”
“Brainwashed,” Van muttered.
“Crazy,” Sarah proclaimed.
“Steampunk,” I corrected with a sigh.

– You mean, – I said, – if this works, I’m going to be the sire to a vampire goldfish? – I shook my head in despair. – Thanks, Mum. You do realize you’ve probably ruined my undead social life? –
– I’ve decided what to name the fish. – Zack was hunched over, peering through the glass in fascination. – Braaaaaaains.
