Graham McNeill: Forges of Mars

The Martian Mechancius's thirst for knowledge is insatiable, and when Archmagos Lexell Kotov learns of an ancient expedition that went in search of the very source of life in the universe itself, he immediately assembles a powerful Explorator fleet to follow in its footsteps. Not only does Kotov have the powerful engines and warriors of the Adeptus Mechanicus to call upon, even the troops of the Imperial Guard and the vaunted Space Marines join his crusade. The way, however, is treacherous and fraught with perils both within and without the fleet. There are marvels and wonders at the edge of known space, discoveries beyond price, but there are those who believe the secrets of the universe should stay hidden and beings there who pose a danger not only to the fleet but to the Imperium itself.

Bielanna would never understand the mon-keigh, a race so numerous and wantonly fecund that they outnumbered the stars. But the unimaginable scale of their species did not give them solace, but rather filled them with fear and drove them to stamp out any form of life and worship that did not match their own. Such unthinking hatred could only ever breed hatred in return, but the humans could not see that by their own actions were they damning themselves to an eternity of strife.
The more Bielanna saw of the humans aboard this ship, the less she thought of them as sentient beings at all. They were living grease in a grinding mechanical engine, corpuscles shunted from place to place in service of the great machine's continuance. How they could not see that they were little better than microbes crawling within the body of a larger beast was beyond her.
'They are not worshipping you', she whispered, pausing beneath one of the half-machine, half-human skulls stamped on a sheet steel wall. 'You enslave them and they believe themselves blessed.'

'Knowledge is power. They call that the first credo, but they are wrong. Knowledge is just the beginning. It is in the application of knowledge that power resides. After all, what is the value of discovery if we do not put what we learn into effect?'
