Martha's Vineyard, 1650's: Bethia Mayfield is a young girl growing up in the tiny settlement of Great Harbor, amid a small band of English colonists. Restless and bright, but denied the education that her brother receives, she slips away as often as she can to explore the island's wild landscapes and observes its native Wampanoag inhabitants. One day, she meets Caleb, the young son of a chieftain – it is an encounter that will shape the course of both their lives.
When Bethia's minister fater takes it upon himself to educate Caleb it will open a rift between the island's communities. And, as Caleb makes the crossing into the culture of the English settlers, Bethia finds herself pulled in the opposite direction…
