George MacPherson: Celtic Sea Stories

Several stories were given to me on the condition that if I told or published them the name of the teller would not be connected to them. In fact, some were very insistent on such a promise before they told the stories to me. […] One of the reasons I have tried to maintain this promise is that I discovered there was a belief in the very old Celtic tradition that if a story was recorded in any way whilst the teller was telling it, then part of the spirit of both story and teller died with it.

When a story is passed to one it brings with it a duty and privilege to be true to the story and allow the natural rhythm of it to carry as you tell. It is the story that counts, not the teller.

„Don't do that. I can't be dry and warm. Please, put me back or at least throw some water over me.”
Well now this made Eachan think of the stories he heard from the old folk in the glen and looking well again at the girl he said „No ordinary girl would ask for such a thing or swim so far. Tell me who you are and what you are.”
„I am called different names.” she said „They call me Nighean Mara (Seamaid), or Bidse Mara (Whore of the Sea); some Earasaighe (Sea Bitch) and some much worse.”
„I have heard of you right enough” said Eachan „I also know that you are cursed and called the murderess of sailors and fishermen such as myself, but I cannot believe that anyone so beautiful can kill anyone.”

But Brandon said: „Two of these men are worshippers of pagan gods. Can this be good on a ship which is of the one true god?”
„Is the ship good enough for the journey?” said Columba.
„It is indeed” said Brandon.
„Then so are the men, for the same god made us all.”

Deep, deep down in the depths of the great sea, where peace dwelled and the dark green gloom was pierced by no shaft of light from the world above, lived a race of people that had their own world and culture and way of life, which paralleled that of the land yet was not of it.
They were the people from beneath the sea, the Lochlannaich, and they had been a great and strong people.
