The Life of Catherine Howard, Fifth Wife of King Henry VIII
Gareth Russell: Young and Damned and Fair

Born into nobility and married into the royal family, Catherine Howard was attended every waking hour – secrets were impossible to keep. In this thrilling reappraisal of Henry VIII’s fifth wife, Gareth Russell’s history unfurls as if in real time to explain how the queen’s career ended with one of the great scandals of Henry’s reign. This is a grand tale of the Henrician court in its twilight, a glittering but pernicious sunset during which the king’s unstable behaviour and his courtiers’ labyrinthine deceptions proved fatal to many, not just to Catherine Howard.

Gareth Russell: Young and Damned and Fair The Life of Catherine Howard, Fifth Wife of King Henry VIII

Norfolk left London quetly on the king's order on 12 February, just as the weather was beginning to thaw, and reached the French court for days later. His mission was to weaken Francois's trust in the emperor by playing on anxieties about Milan and liaising wth courtiers who might be privately hostie to the pact with Austria.
In this he had no better ally than the Franch king'selder sister Marguerite, Queene of Navarre.

The Duke of Norfolk was not the feeble.minded ogre of popular legend; in biography and fiction he is often presented as a cretinous boor pining for wars against France or a return of the Wars of the Roses, with nothing to commend him to Henry VIII's goverment except his title. It is easy to forget that the duke could be charming, engaging and courteous, He was also a Francophile with real military skills but little hunger for war. On many occasions, his advice should have been listened to, for example on Ireland in 1520, the north in 1536, or the Anglo-Scottich border in 1539. Yet he was also prone to faintly hysterical reactions and he was incapable of admitting he was in the wrong – when defending himself in 1546, he did not mimic many of his contemporaries by acknowledging his own wretchedness in dissappointing the king, but instead hit back with, „In all times past unto this time, I have shewed my self a most true man to my sovereign lord” – and when he lost his temper, he was accusatory, offensive and aggressive.

Edmund's father wanted to give King James's remains a proper burial; he and several councillors, had to talk the queen out of her original plan of sending of his body to Henry as a token of victory. The queen relented. She dispatched James's blood-soaked coat to her husband instead of his body and jokingly cast herself a good little housewife in the accompanying letter […].
