A maga műfajában (médiakritika-közéleti kritika) ez egy egész komoly könyv, bár nem kifejezetten komolykodó vagy finomkodó. Wheen alapos kíméletlenséggel boncolgatja a 70-es évek óta (az angloszférából hozzánk is bőven beérkezett) antiracionális, felvilágosodásellenes és érzelmekre apelláló politikai retorikát, valamint az ezzel párhuzamosan kibontakozott neoliberális gazdaságpolitikai fiaskót. Amennyire bele lehetne sülni egy ilyen műveletbe, úgy meglepő módon a hivatkozásokban gazdag, ám egyszersmind olvasmányos szöveg olvasható, sőt, hol homlokráncoló, hol kárörvendő bólogatásokkal ellenpontozható.
A „mumbo-jumbo”, vagyis hókusz-pókusz eseteit, felhasználását, hatalomra törését és tulajdonképpeni világuralmát a tizennyolcadik századtól a posztmodernen át az iszlám állampolitikák és interkulturális inkompatibilitások, de mindenekelőtt az USA és Nagy-Britannia eseményei nyomán kísérjük végig. Tony Blairtől Fukuyamáig, Diana hercegnőtől Kissingerig nagyjából fél évszázad közéleti (és gazdasági és politikai) eseményein rágjuk át magunkat, igen tanulságos és szemléletes folyamat.
Nem mindig tudtam azonosulni a szerző nem ritkán rosszmájú álláspontjaival, ám a tárgyi kérdésekben erős és következetes kritikáját adja a kortárs (anno 2004) ideológiai ámokfutásának, és kiáll a felvilágosodás hagyományai mellett. Jól teszi.
