Promise, Michigan is very much like every other small town across the state. Built on the edge of a lake, the homes sit in neat little rows in cute little neighborhoods. During the summer Promise bustles with tourists who come to spend their vacation dollars and enjoy the lake’s refreshingly cold water. But Promise holds a terrible secret. In the center of the lake is an abandoned island where a curse is rumored to wait for victims, unabated and deadly. Most think it’s just a story, something used to keep kids out of trouble. Still, everyone gives it a wide berth. Everyone except Bret and Adam. They dare to venture out the night of Bret’s birthday. When they declared their love and promise to get married, they believe no one else heard their whispered words—but they are wrong.

Five years later Adam dies, and Bret returns to his family to heal. But someone is killing the people of Promise in random acts of violence. Bret, with the help of FBI agent Jeff McAllister, must… (tovább)

F. E. Feeley Jr.: Still Waters

“So, where we headed?”
“Uh, you probably eat bar food all the time, right? How about something a little more not gonna kill you in five years?” Bret asked.
Jeff laughed. “Italian?”
“That’ll work. Which way?”

“So, tell me about yourself.”
Jeff emptied his glass and set it on the table. “What do you want to know?”
“Why we’re eating out, why you look amazing and relaxed with a murderer on the loose. Also, I want to know more about you. I’ve seen enough Law & Order to understand you have a file with my name on it somewhere on your person and it contains everything I’ve ever done. Possibly including my macaroni art from kindergarten,” Bret said simply.

“What?” Jeff smiled, tilting his head.
“Is this standard operating procedure for a homicide investigation?” Bret asked, tilting his head to the side.
Jeff shook his head and put his finger underneath Bret’s chin. “Nope.”
Then he lowered his mouth onto Bret’s.

“Yeah, that sounds good,” Bret said, and she winked at him before turning away. He blushed a little, and Jeff grinned. “What?” he asked, reaching for the bowl of creamers and sugar.
“She has good taste,” Jeff said. That made Bret blush harder. “Yeah well, she couldn’t have had too good taste— I got the wink, you didn’t.” He pulled off the top of the liquid container and dumped its contents inside his coffee cup.
“I’m an old man compared to you,” Jeff said.
Bret raised his eyes and looked at him while he considered that statement. There was some salt and pepper in Jeff’s hair and worry lines around his eyes, but his face was handsome, and the morning stubble that shadowed his chin made Bret wonder what it would feel like against his face.
“Well, don’t feel too bad, unless you had plans of picking up the waitress. I think you’re handsome,” Bret said,

“I did everything I could do to rid myself of being gay. I joined the Marines, figured they would beat it out me. Literally. That didn’t work. There were gay people in the Marines who did their jobs just as well as anyone else. I was raised in a pretty conservative family, and I felt like they would never accept me. So I hid.”
Bret felt his heart break a little as he understood what Jeff was saying, but he didn’t respond and just let him continue.
“From my politics to my job working at the federal level to serve and protect… I figured somehow these hero things would somehow make up for my shortfalls in life,” he said thickly, shamefaced. “I had lovers, plenty of them. I even had some relationships, but they all had a shelf life attached to them from the first hello. I knew our first kiss was already the first kiss good-bye.”
Jeff looked up, his eyes misted over and his jaw clenched. “I’m getting older. Time is slipping away a little more each day, and when I look around me, I see all my stuff. My work. My job. My responsibilities. And I just want someone to miss me. I see what you and Adam had, and I just… I… just want someone inside of all of it. In my life.

Jeff was angry at himself for leaving Bret alone, angry that he couldn’t save Martin, and angry that he had wandered into an impossible case where he felt as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Chapter 14

“With everything going on— the murder and the cover-up— that’s all they are, really: a gang. We went over so many different definitions of terror organizations the world over, including right here in the good ol’ US of A. What happened here is no different. But you know, I have to respect gangs a little more now,” he said, rubbing his forehead.
“Why’s that?”
“They don’t hide behind God to do their evil deeds.”

“Can I get you something to drink? Something to eat?” Jeff asked, taking off his jacket. He took off his handcuffs, pistol, and phone, then laid them down on the table where Reggie had been sitting.
“Some water and a handsome FBI agent, if you please,” Bret said smiling.
“I can do the water, but I’m not sure where there’d be a handsome FBI agent. I mean, I may have to do,”

He’d seen it a thousand times— the FBI had had it sent to his office with a note from the director:
I think you were right, this one should be labeled X Files. It’s too bad we don’t have a branch for this particular thing.

In death, they found hope; in fear, they found solace; and it would be in uncertainty, he would find peace.
