Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Thing Around Your Neck

A kötetben levő novellák rövidebbek-hosszabbak, napokra felosztva pár hétig kitartanak.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Thing Around Your Neck

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Thing Around Your Neck

„The arrangers of marriage” és „The Thing Around Your Neck”
I found it interesting in both short stories how Akunna and Chinaza had very high expectations of the US, mainly as a result of what their families told them and how these expectations were slowly diminished. In The arrangers of marriage, what I think could have caused Chinaza more frustration even more frustration than the immense culture shock she was experiencing was that her husband, believing the „American life” and way of things to be superior to the Nigerian one, tried to strip her from such huge parts of her identity. It really felt like reading about a rubbery or a homicide, when he „advised” her to use her English name, which she didn't felt her own, to speak only in English, within that use American vocabulary, to eat meals she didn't like, to cook such meals, to wear clothes unfamiliar to her etc… It's like stealing the ground beneath someone's feet and commanding them to walk, nonetheless. And of course I was infuriated when the truth came out about his secret and he gaslighted her to believe that really, she's the one to fault there, because she doesn't appreciate all the good things as much as she should that her husband, her aunt and uncle gave her; and the values along which he chose her: quite, good, light-skinned Nigerian, possibly a virgin.
In The thing around your neck it was hard to read about how Akunna was basically perceived as the ticket to a better life by her kin, the things they said to her that were a „mixture of ignorance and arrogance”, I really liked that phrase it is a great way to encapsulate how the people asking them don't really care about the people they direct their questions at and don't want to, believing their culture to be superior. I also think that the short story not only portrays the struggles of Nigerian immigrants, bit immigrants from anywhere, how they are taken advantage of, have a hard time moving forward financially having to establish a life without anyone helping them and sending back money for their family. It was also quite intriguing to me how she had a hard time establishing relationships and rightly so.
I don't particularly like open-ended stories, but I assume what is important about these wasn't how they ended really but rather how they went until then. These short stories really drew me in, so I'm inclined to read all the others as well in the collection.

On Monday of Last Week
The topic, I gathered, was the estrangement of married couples, the hope for something new and better and the following disappointment. It was quite heartbreaking to see how marriages that started out exceptionally well turned out to be lack of enjoyment by time or/and distance. Furthermore, because of the way these marriages declined, the unhappy ones in them weren't able to express their emotions and talk through their problems with their partner, they got stuck. This feeling was conveyed in a captivating way, so they really hit emotionally.

The Shivering
The beginning of the short story felt a little odd for me, I was afraid of what's going to happen because of how Ukamaka got these unpleasant gut feelings from Chinedu and also I found it weird that he just turned up in her doorstep. In the end I was glad that they realised how much they have in common concerning their relationship and it was nice to see their friendship develop. I must say the ending felt very sudden, first, I thought that I accidentally skipped a page. What I take with me from this short story is the question Chinedu askes Ukamaka: „Have you ever considered that it wasn’t love?” Does someone love you if you have to make sacrifice after sacrifice to please them and they are still not happy?

A Temporary Matter
If I was writing this for the high school final exam, I'd start with how I think the title is a metaphor for both the temporary manner of the Shukumar and Shoba having a baby, their marriage, and the time Shukumar thought they can save it. Now, I would rather state that I think this was the short story that most shook me on an emotional level. I did read one other story, a novel by Colleen Hoover, titled All Your Perfects, which had miscarriage/infertility and the following marital problems as a centre theme. That really shook me as well. Here, I was hoping, alongside Shukumar that their problem was a temporary one and they could solve it if they tried. spoiler Anyway, the author did a great job at showing how two people can drift apart, because of grief, one shutting himself up in the house feeling guilty, the other trying to escape the house and life reminding her over and over again of her loss. Both avoiding conversation and being at each other's presence because it is too hard. Watching all this is crushing in itself, let alone living through it. I also liked the “it is easier to talk to each other in the dark” element.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Thing Around Your Neck
