I laughed. ”He fetched me. I don't know why."
”He missed you," he said with typical bluntness. ”He ain't a machine: he just want folk to think he is." He laughed and hugged me again. ”Thank God you be back. It be hell here since you left."

Chapter 4

”So you don't know why he changed his mind?" I asked.
”He missed you," Cook said with a shrug.
”Or needed you," Gus added.
”Same thing," Seth said.
”No, it ain't," both Gus and Cook said.

Chapter 6

”So what now?" I asked with a shrug. ”What will you do tomorrow?"
”Celebrate your birthday, of course!" Seth grinned. ”Nineteen,eh? I remember that age. So young, So innocent."
Gus snorted. ”You were not innocent at nineteen."
”Nor were you."

Chapter 8

”Charlie," he whispered so softly that the breeze almost took it.
And then he clasped my face in both his hands and kissed me.
I placed my palms against Lincoln's chest and shoved. He stopped kissing me. ”Don't," I growled, punching him in the shoulder. ”Don't do that. Don't, don't, don't."
He stepped back. I strode past him and continued toward Bart's.
He fell into step beside me. ”Sorry,I…" He dragged his hands through his hair. ”I'm sorry." […] ”I couldn't help myself." Oh, wonderful. He chose now to be talkative. ”I was relieved to see you unscathed this morning and couldn't control the urge."
”Ha! You are the most disciplined, self-controlled person I know. You could have resisted."
”Perhaps I didn't want to."

Chapter 12-Chapter 13

”I want you to say everything you want to say to me now. Everything that's upsetting you. Don't hold back."
I straightened my spine and strode to the fireplace to gather my wits. ”Very well, but be warned, you're not going to like this."
”I don't expect to."

Chapter 13

”You don't forgive me."
”No."
His nostrils flared. ”I can only apologize again."
”I don't want to hear it anymore."
A frown sliced his brow. ”Then…how can I make it right again?" […]
”You can't. I don't expect you to."

Chapter 14

Lincoln drew in a deep breath before turning back to me. ”Ready?"
I pulled on my long gloves and stood. ”Ready."
He held out his arm and I took it. He must have felt my hand shaking because he placed his hand reassuringly over it. ”You look beautiful, by the way. You always do."

Chapter 18

”You must rest, Lincoln."
”I can't."
”You can."
”I need to-"
”No." I put up my finger. ”The only thing you need to do is rest. Dr Fawkner said so. The danger has passed, and everything is being taken care of."
”You're beautiful when you're ordering me about."
I sucked in a breath. Be strong, Charlie. Don't give in.

Chapter 19

”All I want – all I've ever wanted – is a home where I felt safe." […]
I stared out the window, but I saw only my own reflection and that of the room behind me. ”You will have your own Lichfield one day, Alice, but until you do, you can share mine."

Chapter 20

”You've remained friends with many of your paramours. Do you think Lincoln and I can one day be friends, of sort?"
He shrugged. ”The thing is, my lovers know from the outset that I'm not going to marry them. They understand our arrangement, and most want the same thing I do without the complications of courting. Your situation is entirely different." […]
He kissed the top of my head. ”Now get ready. I want you to wear the largest hat you have, preferably with a veil, and something with a high collar."
