Elég sokféle történet bújik meg ebben a kis gyűjteményben karakter és cselekmény szempontjából is. Egyesek bizarrnak tűnnek, mások kedvesnek, míg valamelyik egy kis időre megállásra késztetett, de mindegyik egy általános érvényű mondanivalóra, társadalomszemléletre épül, vagy esetleg szimplán csak egy megoldatlan rejtély kerül középpontba, amire a történetben sem lelünk magyarázatra.

It came whispering from the springs of the rocking horse – and even the horse, bending its wooden head, heard it. The other toys heard it, and even the foolish little dog looked more foolish because he heard the secret whisper all over the house: 'There must be more money'
Bud nobody ever said it out loud. The whisper was everywhere, and therefore no one spoke it. Just as no one ever says: 'We are breathing' although breath is coming and going all the time.
