In the early 1900s, women were allowed (by men) to whack a tennis ball in ladylike fashion, or even to swim – if properly covered. But British women who dared to run in any footraces were called „brazen doxies.” Not until 1928 could women run in the Olympics, and when several untrained women collapsed at the finish of the 800-meter (approximately half a mile) race, the event was labeled – again, by men – as „frightful.” Women were not allowed to compete at this long distance again until the 1960 Olympics; not until 1984 was the longest race for women extended beyond 1,500 meters – less than a mile. That year, women were allowed to compete in the Olympic 3,000-meter and marathon distances. In 1988, they could also run the 10,000-meter race.
