Whispers Under Ground (Peter Grant 3.) 8 csillagozás
A WHOLE NEW REASON TO MIND THE GAP
It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher—and the victim’s wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom—if it exists at all—is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects . . . except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter Grant. With Inspector Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, tied up in the hunt for the rogue magician known as “the Faceless Man,” it’s up to Peter to plumb the haunted depths of the oldest, largest, and—as of now—deadliest subway system in the world.
At least he won’t be alone. No, the FBI has sent over a crack agent to help. She’s young, ambitious, beautiful . . . and a born-again Christian apt to view any magic as the work of the devil. Oh yeah—that’s going to go well.

Úgy néz ki, a sorozat tényleg próbál a jellegzetes londoni helyszínekre fókuszálva egy urban fantasy-krimi keveréket bemutatni. A Temze, a Soho vagy most éppen a földalatti világ tényleg egyedi hangulatot kölcsönöz a helyszínnek (amit például a hasonló Dresden-akták Chicagoja nem mondhat el magáról).
Szintén a sorozat jó pontjaira reflektálva, a rengeteg megjegyzés a nyomozás bürokratikus oldalaira kifejezetten izgalmassá teszi az ügyet, különösen amiatt, mert egyszerre három szervezet között kell elrendezni a feladatokat. Ezt megerősítő a jó kis cinikus/enyhén szarkasztikus stílus, amit tényleg kedvelek.
Ugyanakkor a főszereplő Peter Granttel egyre kevésbé vagyok kibékülve.

Nightingale was standing under a lamppost in a long oyster-white Burberry coat that made him look like something from an old film. All he was missing was a cigarette, a hat and a doomed love affair with a suburban housewife.
As far as we could reconstruct it, Geoffrey Wheatcroft, an undistinguished wizard by all accounts, had retired post-war to teach theology at Magdalen College, Oxford. At some point in the mid-1950s he had sponsored a student dining club called the Little Crocodiles. Dining clubs being what posh undergraduates did in the fifties and sixties when they weren't having doomed love affairs, spying for the Russians or inventing modern satire.
I often forget how good a driver Nightingale is, especially in the Jag. He insinuates himself through the traffic like a tiger padding through a jungle, or at least how I imagine a tiger pads through a jungle. For all I know the damn things swagger through the forest like Rottweilers at a poodle show.
'There's always a secret door,' I said. 'That's why you always need a thief in your party.'
'You never said you used to play Dungeon and Dragons,' Lesley had said when I explained my reasoning. I'd been tempted to tell her that I'd been thirteen at the time and anyway it was Call of Cthulhu but I've learnt from bitter experience that such remarks generally only makes things worse.
My dad says that the Russians have a saying: a man can get used to hanging if he hangs long enough. Unfortunately, what is true of hanging is not true of the smell of the London sewers, which are truly indescribable. Let’s just say that it’s the sort of smell that follows you home, hangs around outside your door and tries to hack your voicemail.
Despite my mum being from a small village in the middle of a forest I’m not a country person. I don’t like my bacon sandwich to be curiously snuffling at my fingers. But sometimes being police means holding your breath and fondling a pig.
The animal flesh under my hand was rough, warm and disturbingly like human skin. I gave an experimental scratch and the sow made an encouraging grunting noise.
‘Good pigs,’ I whispered to Ten-Tons. ‘Very porky.’ I swear I don’t know where this stuff comes from sometimes.
‘Are you coming down with us, sir?’ I asked Seawoll.
‘Don’t be stupid,’ said Seawoll. ‘I’m far too fucking senior to go down there. It’s strictly constables, sergeants and lunatics. We’ll keep the kettle on for you.’
