This part of Central Asia at that time was part of the Persian Empire. Avicenna is best known as a physician whose major work, the Canon (al-Qanun fil-Tibb), continued to be taught as a medical textbook in Europe for 600 years and is still used in the Middle East and South Asia under the name of Unani medicine.
