A collection of fifteen essays written between 1976 and 1984 gives clear voice to Audre Lorde's literary and philosophical personae. These essays explore and illuminate the roots of Lorde's intellectual development and her deep-seated and longstanding concerns about ways of increasing empowerment among minority women writers and the absolute necessity to explicate the concept of difference—difference according to sex, race, and economic status. The title Sister Outsider finds its source in her poetry collection The Black Unicorn (1978). These poems and the essays in Sister Outsider stress Lorde's oft-stated theme of continuity, particularly of the geographical and intellectual link between Dahomey, Africa, and her emerging self.

Hatalmas pozitív csalódás volt ez a könyv. Egyrészt azért, mert azt gondoltam, hogy mit mondhat egy olyan könyv, ami a 80-as években íródott. Másrészt mert tartottam attól, hogy egy leszbikus feminista szerző könyve hogyan fog átmenni az én keresztény szűrőmön. Hát sajnos azt tapasztaltam, hogy amit ír, abszolút aktuális ma is, el is felejtettem, hogy egy harminc éve íródott kötetről van szó. Ami pedig a második aggodalmamat illeti, hát átment rajta. Nyilván nem értek mindennel egyet, de nem is kényszerítette rám. Azzal egyetértek, hogy a homofóbia nagyon nem oké, és szerintem ez bőven elég.
Nem jegyzeteltem olvasás közben, úgyhogy nem lesz nagyon részletes, hogy mi maradt meg, de azért pár dolgot megemlítenék:
– Az orosz könferencia nagyon erős felütés volt nekem, nem azért mert annyira mély gondolatok voltak benne, bár az is (munka értéke), hanem mert annyira magával ragadott, ahogy leírta, eszembe jutottak az oroszországi emlékeim, és az olyan jó volt.
– A művészet az, amit érzünk, az elmélet pedig az, amit logikusan tudunk.
– Amit a költészetről írt, hát az valami zseniális, legszívesebben idézném az egészet, de mivel hangoskönyvben hallgattam, ez kicsit problémás. A lényeg, hogy a költészet olyan kifejezőeszköz, amihez nem kell még saját szoba sem, csak egy papír és te. A versek pedig érzések szavakba öntve.
– A csönd nem véd meg. Sőt. Nem a különbözőség bénít meg, hanem a csönd.
– Amit pornóról ír, az is zseniális, hogy az csak érzékiség érzés nélkül.
– Angolul jobban hanzik, de hogy ebben a világban nem a különbözőségeket (difference) látjuk, hanem a normától való eltérést (deviation) és ez elég rossz így.
– Azt is érdekesnek találtam, amit az erotikáról írt, de nem annyira értettem vele egyet.
