There is an interesting story and probably a record for the Guinness Book of Records, all because of these big changes in tide. During the English Civil War in the middle of the 17th century, one of King Charles I's ships was sailing up the Bristol Channel, just outside Watchet. Probably the captain was not a Somerset man, because he got too close to the shore, and before he knew what happening, he was stuck on the rocks! The cavalry of Oliver Cromwell saw the ship on the beach, attacked it and took it, so this was the only naval battle in history where the winners were not on a ship but on horses.
