Jack of Thorns (Inheritance 1.) 2 csillagozás

Amelia Faulkner: Jack of Thorns

Florist. Psychic. Addict.

Laurence Riley coasts by on good looks and natural charm, but underneath lies a dark chasm that neither heroin nor lovers can fill. Sobriety is a pipe dream which his stalker ex-boyfriend is pushing him away from. Luckily, Laurence has powers most can only dream of. If only he could control them.

Aristocrat. Psychic. Survivor.

Quentin d'Arcy is the product of centuries of wealth, privilege, and breeding, and is on the run from all three. A chance encounter with an arresting young florist with a winning smile could make him stop. Laurence is kind, warm, and oddly intriguing but Quentin's wild telekinesis and his fear of sex make dating a dangerous game.

When opposites attract, they collide.

Desperate to fix his rotting life, Laurence prays for aid and accidentally summons a fertility god who prefers to be called Jack. Jack is willing to help out for a price, and it's one Laurence just can't pay: he must keep Jack fed… (tovább)

Amelia Faulkner: Jack of Thorns

A borító azonban – a rózsás, egyértelműen – csodás!

Amelia Faulkner: Jack of Thorns

“Is that safe?”
“I dunno, man. But you can’t worry all the time about whether or not everything’s safe. Sooner or later you’ve gotta let yourself enjoy life, right?”

“Dude, what did you ever do to pass the time in England anyway?”
The same I do here, he thought bitterly. Drink myself into a stupor and fall over a lot.

Laurence’s lip curled. “Stop being so damn stubborn and proud, Quen. I’m taking you home. Get in the truck.”
Quentin stared at him. “If I refuse, will my name get even shorter?”
“Try me.”

“I guess that’s kinda why I want us to go try to level up, you know? See what we’re packing.”
“Are we packing?” Quentin plucked at some lint on his sweater which was most likely imagined. “Where are we headed that we need to pack for?”
“I am gonna have to teach you English one day.”

He heard Ellie barking the moment he cut the engine and tried not to smirk to himself. His mom’s Border Collie was always full of energy, and loved to jump up at people. The thought of her bright white fur sticking to Quentin’s pristine sweater made for a satisfying mental image, and could go a long way toward revenge for the earl stealing his joint.
“Oh yeah,” he muttered as he kicked open the door and hopped out. “Mom’s got a dog.”
“Wonderful!” Quentin eased himself out just as the black and white rocket zoomed out from the back of the house, her tail spinning like a rotor.
At first Laurence had to admit to feeling a little smug as Ellie shot herself at Quentin and began to bounce around him like he was the best thing ever. Then as Quentin got down onto his knees in the dusty driveway and roughhoused with her, the smugness began to fade.
Quentin was laughing.
“Who’s a good girl? Is it you? Yes, it is! You’re a very good girl, aren’t you? Yes, you are! Oh, yes!” His hands scratched between her ears, beneath her chin, over her belly, and Ellie rolled around like a total lunatic and let him do it.
Laurence snorted at her. “Some guard dog you are.”

Time was such an odd thing. Everything depended on it, and yet it cared for nothing. It was in some sense the ultimate apex predator, shaping all landscapes and yet consuming all who lived within it.

“Bambi, you cannot allow yourself to be ruled by futures which may or may not come to pass. You must seize the moment. You are alive now. The past can always be walked away from, and the future is nothing more than a choice of different paths, but the here and now?” She took a mouthful of tea. “This is where we live. This is where we experience joy, happiness, love, heartbreak. You must do what you can to make your now a better thing.”
“Even if it only lasts a week?”
“Especially if it only lasts a week.”

“Quality of life is important, dear. Happiness is important.” She bustled to the fridge and fetched the milk. “And so is love. I have been watching you fall in love for weeks now, Bambi. You have no idea how wonderful it is for a mother to see her child smile so much. Maybe one day you will, but for now you’re gonna have to take my word for it. Don’t lose what you’ve built over some petty argument or matter of pride.”
